Help with injured Toulouse Goose!

Hello everyone. My beautiful Toulouse has been quite naughty this week, and has refused to hang in the barn overnight. Today my husband found her in the yard dragging her wing; it appears she may have been attacked while out.

I would have administered basic common sense first aid, but am injured myself with a multi fracture, and cannot get to her.

Can anyone give me pointers or help in this area which I can explain to my husband so as to get her cared for before she dies?

Surely would appreciate any help.

First you need to get her into a secure area then check her over real well to see what kinds of injuries she has, if any open wounds they need to be wash with soap and water and then depending on how deep the proper meds need to be used, there is a product called Veterycin and it comes in a spray for wounds and infection, I like it because it can be used around the face and is very safe. she may even need some antibiotic internally or through shots. get your dh to ggive her a good through check over and then post back what he has found. make sure she has plenty of fresh water to drink and dunk her head in. She maybe in shock so make sure where you put her is warm and out of drafts. and clean. Keep in mind a vetr be be your only chance here depending on what you find.

Thanks. Yes, hubby secured the right wing, which is definitely broken, and he is taking her into a vet. We couldn't find a single Farm Vet in our area, which is a little strange, but found one who specializes in birds across town. From the injuries she sustained, our thinking is that the handsome and all by himself Canada goose that was hanging around over the last few days attempted to mate with her. There are feathers off the back of her neck, and scratches on her back, much like a new hen would get. She is a young Toulouse, only a year old, and hasn't had a boyfriend yet.

It looks like she may actually have breaks in both wings, we'll see what the vet can do for her. Thank you so much for your input!

Let us know what the vet says. i don't know but I'm not so sure a canada gander could do such damage i have an Embden gander and a just turned 1yr Toulouse goose and he is much larger than her and they mate and he hasn't hurt her. Is the Canada gander still there?

I haven't seen him, but I'm not seeing much being laid up with this multi-fracture.

Funny thing about that Gander; he was born on our property 2 years ago , the only surviving gosling of a nest that was attacked by a night predator. One of our chickens took him under her wing, until he migrated off with a bunch of area Canada Geese. We were never sure which sex he was. He came back for a day or two last year and hung out with our chickens walking the property all day.

I had just been thinking about if he was going to come back again, and hubby saw him. When our Silly Goose wouldn't barn up, she was hanging with that Goose, and hubby didn't see any harm, so didn't chase him off.

Like Miss Lydia Im very surprised that a Canada gander would leave a large goose with broken wings!

Whatever the cause I do hope your Vet soon has her on the road to recovery.

thanks all; the veterinary assistants have her tucked in and as comfortable as they can get her, and we'll hear tomorrow what the bird specialist has to say. So glad I'm not the only one with a Goose in the Family!

The reason I asked about the Canada gander if he was still there I was wondering if a large predator may have come in last night and attacked her and was wondering if the Gander was still around today? I hope you hear good news tomorrow.

Thank you for all your replies. My lovely Silly passed in the night before the avian specialist came to work.

I just don't even know where to begin to find another good girl like that .
