We went on vacation and due to a misunderstanding with the chicken sitter there were 10 eggs left under a broody hen, so we had a bit of an accidental bunch of chicks. Over the course of the 3 weeks we had 4 eggs break but thankfully they were not developing. We have two chicks out in the coop now, doing very well, and one in the house. She was very badly shrink wrapped to the point where the membrane and the shell were totally separate, so I helped her out. She hadn’t absorbed the yolk all the way but it dried out so she can’t absorb it anymore. This is what her naval area looks like and I’m a little concerned about it.

She is inside under a heat lamp, will she finish absorbing that and her naval will close? Do I need to do something?

I know this will sound simplistic, but I would spray the umbilicus with saline, then dab some antibiotic ointment on it, then hope for the best.

Ok, I’ll do that. Thank you!
