....I need help on what to do...
never had this problem before and got no
replies on previous post but now several
more chicks are 'sneezing'.....
12 chicks ranging 3-4 weeks old,
in seperate pens but next to each other.
first one chick started sneezing in one pen
then one in different pen and in a time span
of 3 days @ 5 are sneezing...

don't know what it is, how to treat but don't
want them to die. Please, what can I do and
what might this be? HELP!!

It could be infectious bronchitis or MG. You need to get some Duramycin-10 and give it to them in their water. Tractor Supply or any farm supply store should have this. Give them the 400mg dose for 14 days. 1 tbls. in 1 gal. of water.

Deb, I agree with your assessment that it could be IB or MG, and recommended treatment. However, OP didnt mention any other symptoms. I'm wondering if it could be an environmental issue such as ammonia fumes from soiled bedding or perhaps they are inhaling feed dust or pollen. More info is needed.

Agreed Dawg, you are absolutely right, but after what I just had happen I am in 'kill it and kill it quick' mode. I will step back until the OP has been able to answer with conditions and other information. Thank-you!

there are no other visable signs...just sneezing/coughing sounds
and are more noticable at night...
no discarge from eyes or noses....

the bedding is from Tractor Supply, the flake shavings
and I change the larger pen every other day and the smaller pen
every day unless either ones needs changing sooner....

all of these babies are housed in their pen in my house...

so....what now?

Hello Folks,

I think this might be as close to a thread as I am going to get with my question. I have a 3-4 week old easter egger that sneezes some times but mostly looks like she is breathing heavily, mouth open, panting but the others are not. The thing that concerns me is that she has not grown very much since I got her. Perhaps because the other two I got with her are males and they have at least doubled (one of them) and tripled (the other male) her size. Her wing feathers are growing in but she is very small.

She eats and poops normally from what I can tell. She has energy, it's the occasional sneezed and laboured breathing. Oh and she is vocal like she is mumbling or muttering to herself. Interesting

Thanks for the answers in advance.

Aaron

What kind of shavings? Make sure there's no cedar.

It doesn't sound to me as if ammonia build up is an issue with the changing of litter you are doing. You are using the pine shavings? Since they are inside your house then their temperature should be fairly stable as well. All this considered, I would put them on a course of Duramycin-10 immediately. If the environment is ruled out, in most cases it points to respiratory disease. Especially since it started with one chick and has spread through the others even though they are housed separately. If it were enviromental, like pollen, dust, etc., it wouldn't be spreading the way it is.

Pictures would be a help. As Dawg mention in a previous posting, more info would be good. How long have you had them? Did you buy them as chicks? From a breeder? What is their feed? How and where are they housed?

I can tell you this much, the mumbling or humming, as I call it, is usually not a good sign. This bird is sick and needs help. The sooner you can get back with the information, the sooner someone can help you and your bird.

Thanks for the initial info.

Some more info on the chick. I did get her from a farm outside of town. This lady seems passionate about chickens. She did advertise on KIjiji. I think the four chicks that I got were one to two weeks old. Two were smaller and they had some diarrhea so I cleaned their bottoms daily. The first week I had them (the four) there was one to two bloody stools daily for less than a week for the entire bunch. Two seemed to grow quickly which I assumed were males and are doing quite well. Feathers are coming in and they look good. The other two didn't seem to grow. About a week and a half ago one of the smaller ones died quite quickly. In the morning it was active, then by night time it was lying on it's side. Her little legs seemed shriveled so I thought dehydration. I tried to give her water but she died an hour or so later.

That lead to the remaining three. They have pine shavings. They are in my house in a breezeway. They are warm.

The two bigger ones don't have the open mouth breathing, only the small one.
You can hear some of the odd sounds she makes near the end of the video.
Thanks for the help
