Help, young duck unable to walk, seems to have something very wrong with him.

My 5yo drake is recovering from very high potassium level right now. Within several hours Monday night he lost all ability to walk, deteriorating fast. I took him to the vet Tuesday morning.

She ended up doing an IV dextrose push to force the potassium back into the cells. Overnight he started to regain ability to stand, and later that day started to walk. So two days later now he can walk and is doing better but is still weak and not very interested in standing and walking. He's home with me now but in ICU.

My two other ducks had a similar situation weeks ago, but not as extreme. We thought it was botulism or some other toxin, so treated them for that. They have recovered.

I am recently learning how so many things can affect a duck and render them unable to walk. It is nerve wracking.

I hope your little one comes around and you find a cause for it.

Did the vet say what caused the high potassium levels? Good to hear he is doing better hopefully he'll make a full recovery.

No, she said it could be many different things. And nothing we could point to for certain. She said usually it's from kidney problems, but they looked fine. Asked if he may have gotten into some fertilizer. But that seems unlikely.
He's still weak and not himself though. I let him join the other two late today and I'm not happy how things are going. I'm very concerned so I'm watching close and keeping my fingers crossed.
I mean, who ever heard of a duck having high potassium?!!

I never have heard of it. Are all your ducks drakes? since this one has been sick the others may take advantage and bully. Especially if he hasn't been with them for a while.

Wow, that is exactly what happened! You must have been around a lot of ducks. I have two other ducks and they are both drakes. As soon as I let him go out it started, but only with one of them. He has continued to try and bully and take advantage of his weakness. I even had to yell at him twice through the duck cam tonight to stop. I thought I was going to have to go out and separate them, or put him in time out. Purpy, the patient, is usually the one going in time out. 😂
I'm surprised he's so bold, because my little sick guy is the 'top duck'. So he better hope 'top duck' doesn't have a good memory when he recovers.
He was only away for 3 days, but it's amazing how quickly they sense something is wrong!
