Last year I had to help a tangeled chick but the mom flogged me. He seemed healthy, so we put him back a safe distance from his mom and she tried to flog us. I do not want that happening again, so how can I help hurt chicks with their mom without welts?

Flogging? You mean the way wayward sailors used to be punished, with a whip or lash? I'd love to see photos of that!

But yes, what the PP said. Work gloves are a must when handling broody and mama hens.

A large piece of cardboard works wonders and won't hurt Mom. It does help to have two people. Have done this with wild geese and ducks in the pond behind the house. As it turned out the mama duck desided that the barn WAS the best plase for her brood. Think of sweeping ducklings out of the barn at night......They are SOOOO messy.

Thanks for the tips. I bookmarked this page so I could find it again. I have a few hens brooding, so I need to know this, in case some get hurt.
