Crud. She's still lethargic/wanting to hunker down. I'll bring her back in. She was out in her own secluded area of the coop to recover. This is great! But, not to put a damper on the celebration, there could be another egg right behind this one. The second egg could be shell-less and prone to collapsing. You will have evidence of a second egg if the patient doesn't rebound immediately.
Continued lethargy and wanting to hunker down is indication she isn't finished. Leave her where she is and provide water with the sugar in it. If this egg comes out broken with yolk squashed and runny, she will require an antibiotic to head off almost certain infection.
Please report on how she's behaving now.
I hate that I have to ask this, but at what point do I have to consider euthanasia? I really don't want her to suffer. The place below her vent keeps getting more swollen, I'll go get a pic nowThis is great! But, not to put a damper on the celebration, there could be another egg right behind this one. Whew, that's good to hear! We're not to that point yet. Having a double egg event is more common than you think. The first time it happened in my flock, it really surprised me. I had never heard of two eggs coming down the chute together. Since then, over the years, I've had several of these. They've all been resolved, and the hen went on to lead a long normal life after calcium citrate treatment.
Here's the swollen belly. Feels almost like ascites, but less big, from what I've read. You can go ahead and give her another dose now. Then again in the morning if she's still in this holding pattern.
Still no change. She's passed some diarrhea, and I gave her a very thin wet mash of chick feed since she hasn't eaten in 4 days. She drank the liquid off the top and pecked a little at the mash. You can go ahead and give her another dose now. Then again in the morning if she's still in this holding pattern.
