Hen laying clumps of shells

Calcium citrate with D3 or Tums plus a little vitamin D3 might work a little better. Foods that have D3 are tuna, salmon, egg, and plain yogurt. If extra calcium does not help after a week or so, then the problem may be with her oviduct shell gland. That can be common in some hens.

I gave the tums and d3 for the 7 days.. while giving she started laying.. not completely normal hard shell but close. She’s back to not laying again since I stopped giving tums. Can I give it to her for a while longer? Or should I be giving something else? Hoping you might have some ideas🤞

Please.. I’ve started her back on the tums with d3 as she stopped laying again. Is there something I can do long term for her? I don’t want to mess up her system giving something longer than I should…. Really appreciate your time and advice!!

I think Azygous has said she has given calcium for 2 weeks, but normally we say 7 days. Calcium in excess can damage the kidneys and cause gout, so I would not keep giving it after 2 weeks max. Is she getting a layer type feed with access to crushed oyster shell daily? She may have a problem with her shell gland in her oviduct or salpingitis.

Tks so much for your time❤️
The last 3 bags have been grower as I’ve got a mixed flock atm. They always have oyster shell available free feed…
I believe my flock contracted infectious bronchitis from some day old chicks I brought in for my broody💔 I lost 2 of the 4 chicks to the respiratory issue and quite a few of my flock started coughing sneezing runny noses and had hoarse voices for a couple days before I got it under control. Everyone got over the respiratory issues but my egg production plummeted and now that they’ve started laying again many of them have misshapen eggs. Have never experienced that before 😔
