Hen Not Being Active

How does her poop look? Any discharge from vent? Has she been laying eggs? Does she come out of nest boxes,or sits in them all the time?

No discharge, haven't see her poop or lay eggs, but got a egg with blood on it that I suspect is hers.

Chicksgalore, she said she got the powder, 20% in a previous post...which is 1/2 to 3/4th teaspoon, or in my case, I started with 1 teaspoon, as the 1/2 tsp is recommended for moderately sick birds, mine were VERY sick. I tapered down, over the week to 1/2 tsp, but used the 1 tsp per gallon when I mixed the mushy feed...which is when I saw the most and best results within hours of feeding.

NO, if you give them the Corid treatment, they will not die from cocci...as long as you can find someone that will tend them the way they need to be for the treatment to work.

I hear ya. I cleaned out the coop, with them IN it...when they first got sick, just not with the ammonia...if you use half water, half ammonia, let it sit for half hour...it should spray right off...it takes about 30 minutes for the ammonia to kill the cocci anyways...mine sprayed right off, only had a few spots I had to scrape with a putty knife and really scrub, but most, of the rest, sprayed right off. I used the hose for a long long time too!

I know, I have also spent a fortune on bedding this past week or so, plus all the bedding that was already in there the first time I cleaned it out...yikes!!!

This is all part of keeping chickens, keeping livestock. They get sick sometimes and we have to be there to take care of them. It's what we all chose to do, when we bought chickens or other livestock...atleast that is what I hope everyone did? Made the choice to put the animals first? The tend to get ill at the most inopportune times also...just like little kids! That is the responsibility we take on with owning another living being. No matter how hard it is.

I am no spring chicken, far from it...so this whole week has me in such pain, it's not even funny...but,I chose this and this is all part of good animal husbandry!

Suggesstion, when I put the new bedding in, and I hate using chemicals, I put down straw first( which can house mites, lice and other blood feeding parasites), for insulation, so dusted the straw with sevin, then topped with shavings. Just a hopefully helpful tip ?
I guess I shouldn't be whining and complaining - I consider these chickens my "kids". If they were human I would baulk at the work involved. I completely agree with you about choosing to take care of them "in sickness and in health" when we get them. And if we don't know they'll get sick or that much work - we'd better man (or woman) up and do it. They're living creatures. They need to be taken care of. (I'm giving myself a pep talk here.) I apoligize for the negative attitude - there really isn't an excuse. The last time I laid down bedding I put DE in it because of the mites, I'll do it again. (know it's not sevin, but, it'll work fine.)

Just quoting myself, never mind, the post was, she found the 20% powder, than another said she bought the 9.6 liquid...

all the info needed is here, so best of luck and hope you find someone in the next 12 hours to chicken sit that will do the treatment right!!!

Have fun on your vaca!!!

No need to apologize sweetie...I understand! I raised 6 kids, had a farm and a kennel of sled dogs...been there, done that. Now, at my age, it's a bit tougher...all I was saying is that we chose this, even if some don't realize what they are getting into...they find out! Some get out, some stay.

I think you are doing fine and it was just a shock, especially with your vaca only 12 hours away. an just cleaning everything...that's tough, I'm there too,( well no vaca coming) just I think much much older

and a tad broken to boot!

Like I said, I cleaned out the coop, with them in it, and top dressed with the straw, till I could get them out in the run for the deep cleaning....was hoping to give you some ideas, to help you get through till you got back...and hopefully, praying you can, find someone that will do the meds for you while you are gone!!! Plus the mushy feed was a hopefully helpful suggestion to get them started good before you leave. We all need to rant and rave a bit at times!!! It's all good!!! Hope you have fun and can relax on your vaca!!!

Tomorrow, I have to go to town to get last minute things for the trip, so I get out of the coop cleaning. :D I am very grateful my brother and sister are willing to clean to coop for me. I cannot say how thankful I am for them. :) and - I was looking up how to treat Cocci here and someone said to not let them eat anything besides their food and treated water. Should I let them range at all? And, what do I do with the inffected poo?
