Hen staying in nesting box... But NO eggs!

Look on your local Craigslist.

A broody does have a determined look, don't they?

This gal survived just fine without hatching eggs. I simply removed the eggs from under her and let her brood to her heart's content. 3 weeks later she got off and spent a day or two reasserting her position within the flock. A broody does not have to hatch an egg. I'll warn you, though, if you do decide to hatch an egg are you prepared to sell the cute little thing when the time comes?

Keep an eye out. Also, if there are people offering chicks this time of year, they are probably hatching their own since most hatcheries don't sell much this time of year. Email a few people and see if they have any hatching eggs available. If you explain your situation, I'm sure someone can help you out.

I absolutely flat out told my last broody hen I was not getting her any eggs, no way, no deal, no how... and then I caved. They are way more determined than me. And tending babies has been the best thing for her -- she's all grown up, not at all nervous or flighty any more -- she has a job to do and she does it! ♥

Good luck and enjoy babies!
