Hen staying in nesting box... But NO eggs!

She is really determined. I stuck my hand in the nesting box.. (stupid idea) and pet her and her feathers stood up and she pecked me.

Oh yeah, they don't want to be disturbed. Not at all. There are all kinds of ways to 'break a broody' but I found just leaving them alone and keeping the eggs away from her will allow her body to naturally go through the hormonal changes. I don't leave a fake egg under her as the egg will encourage her to move the egg about and cause her to remain broody. Now, in my younger days, I've been known to 'lease' out a broody and allow her to hatch another person's egg. Then you have to deal with all the cuteness and remove the chicks from the broody. I always hated to see Mama search for her chicks she hatched out. Of course when you do 'lease' out a broody she must be quarantined from the rest of flock for obvious reasons.

We don't think we are going to do the fertilized eggs. There is no way for us to keep the momma and babies seperated from the rest of the flock... We don't have a big enough coop to somehow seperate them... I'm really bumbed.

Maybe you can sell your broody hen? I have 7 hens and have always wanted a broody so I can hatch more eggs. I do not have an incubator and want todo it naturally.
I wish you lived near-by, we could trade. I have 5----------- 2 month old hens. I would trade a baby for your broody....... oh well.

My Dad thinks it is too cold to have our hens hatch eggs at this time of year.... Is he right? I really want to do this, but he's finding excuses.

It's possible, the mama hen will keep the baby warm. But with a wire cage, I would put it in a garage, or in the coop with a heat lamp, just to be safe...

Thanks for all the help guys.... But my dads answer is no....
