Hen very lethargic and pale comb

Her sister and my Roo seem so concerned over her. Not picking on her in the slightest! Which I truly feel is due to it being a small flock! How do big flicks manage this?

I went this morning and got and purchased poultry dust and ivetamicin I think is how you spell and gave me entire flock a 1/2 pea size amount orally and dusted them and the coop. I went ahead and purchased Tylan and gave her .5 dose under her wing bc she seems worse today. She always would shake her head a lot which I now think was mites. She is actually walking and pecking 30 min after injection which is an improvement from this morning. We opened tractor supply this morning. I had no idea mites and lice could cause such issues!

Which form of Ivermectin did you use - do you have a photo of the packaging - I'll try to help you get the proper dosage.

Injectable Tylan50 can be given orally or by injection into the breast muscle 1/4" deep. Tylan50 has a wide dosage range of 10-40mg/kg given 2-3times per day. If you are going to start antibiotics, it's best to weigh your hen so you know you are giving the correct dosage. I usually start in the medium dose range of 20mg/kg given at least 2times a day.

Chickens can get mites in the ears, so take a look inside the ear to see if there is any pus that would indicate infection.

When was the last time she laid an egg?

Have you actually seen any lice or eggs, or mites on her? Google “lice a and mites in chickens” and then click on The ChickenChick or other sites to look at pictures. I usually do not recommend treating for them unless I can see them. Both are tiny, run around under the vent or some may be found on the neck and under wings, and lice can leave small white clumps of eggs at the base of feathers. Mites are slower, and leave black specks of poop on the skin.

1.87% Ivermectin past dosage is 0.2-0.4 mg/kg - you may want to weigh your hen, then draw up the amount into a syringe to get your dosage. We all have different opinions of what a pea size dose might look like - the worst thing would be to short change the amount you give.

Hi there-

I'm just repeating some questions the more knowledgeable folks asked you earlier just in case you missed them :)

Did you actually see mites and/or lice on her before treating? Like pulled feathers to the side and saw something?

Also, when was the last time this hen laid an egg?
