Please help! When letting my birds out this morning I noticed one of my Araucana hens wouldn’t open her eyes and is very puffed up. In another flock, one of my roosters had been picked on to the point of bleeding in his comb. I have separated both and dont know how to further assist them. The rooster is eating and drinking and I got the hen to hardly eat some yogurt and water.

I’m not sure what is up with the hen, but for the rooster, keep his wounds clean and keep him separated. Maybe get rid of one of thr roosters; this could happen again. Give him water and food and he should get better soon.
As for the hen, keep her separate and give her food and water. Did she get attacked? Is she lethargic? When was the last time she laid? I’m sure experts will be along soon to offer some help. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I think the rooster will recover and we will be getting rid of two other roosters. Should I put anything on his wounds? It sounds like he’s having trouble breathing, maybe because there is dried blood covering his nostrils? He has water and food and seems to be eating and drinking.
I’m more worried about the hen. I got her to hardly sip a little water and yogurt but not much at all. I tried to give her some scrambled egg, but she wouldn’t eat it. I don’t think she got attacked but she did have a weird spot on her feathers

She is lethargic and puffed up. I’m not sure the last time she laid because it’s been so cold lately.
Any other suggestions would be welcomed. I looked at the feed store and I think they have Tylan 50 in stock. Should I try that?

Can you post a photo of the roosters face?

You mention that he is having trouble breathing - is the hen also having any difficulty (wheezing or rattles in the breathing)?

For the wound on his comb, just rinse it a little with saline and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. Do you think this was from fighting with other males or could it be a predator attack? Check through his feathers for any more wounds. If his nostrils are clogged with blood, see if you can wipe them out and if that makes a difference in his breathing.

For your hen --- is that dried mucous in her nostrils? Can you gently open the eye, look at it, then rinse it with some saline? She looks like she may have had a discharge at some point from the eye, it's hard to tell. Also the beak (where the arrow is) look inside - are there any lesions or plaques inside? In the photo it looks like she is open mouth breathing - is that right?

Have you had any sick chickens lately with respiratory illness or have you introduced any new chickens within the last 30days?

Keeping both of them both warm and hydrated is the most important thing to do at this time. Both may be in shock. Once they will drink on their own, then offer food.
Antibiotics may help, but a lot depends on what has happened. If you have a vet that can take a look that is always best.

Thank you for your reply. I just got back from the feed store and was trying to medicate them.

Here is the rooster’s face. I could take another picture if necessary. I know he was attacked by another rooster. I saw the other rooster picking on him inside the coop, actually inside the nesting box. Should I wipe the wound/nostrils with a wet paper towel? I was able to spray some MicrocynAH Poultry Care on his wounds and put some Nutri-Drench on his beak and in his water.

The hen I’m more worried about. She won’t eat or drink. I’ve been able to put some yogurt on her beak and put a little Nutri-Drench on her beak but I don’t think she’s really getting much of it. She won’t drink water. I bought a syringe but I don’t want to drown her by trying to force her to drink. I sprayed the MicrocynAH Poultry care on her face as well (concentrating on the eyes) and tried to put MicrocynAH Opthalmic Gel on her eyes but she wouldn’t let me.

I really don’t know if she will let me open her eyes or mouth, although I’m sure she’s not strong enough to stop me. She doesn’t seem to be mouth breathing. If I can open her eyes should I just use my saline solution for contact lenses?

We have added new turkey hens that she was with, but she wasn’t with them since this weekend and this seemed to show up overnight. We also added other new chickens but they are quarantined and didn’t ever have contact with her. There was another Araucana that wasn’t doing well, but different symptoms (missing feathers on her back and didn’t have any eye problems) that past away last week. Again, this hen had been with her before but we just had moved her over the weekend.

I have them in the garage and have a heat lamp on them. They are both in separate cages. He is eating and drinking somewhat but I can’t get her to. She is still pretty puffed up. I felt around her crop and it feels like there is a lump in her throat.

If there is anything else I should pick up, please let me know. Someone had mentioned collodial silver.

Thank you so much!
