Hens Crop Not Empting at Night Please help

What ever you do, never use hay or even straw. Hay apparently can have mouldy issues as well as them eating eat. I know I made mistakes, now I have to deal with this. It's really hard, you don't want them to die.

I notice that when she eats her mash, there is yellow or off white looking phylum stuff in her dish. I've change it a few times. I'm felling its the stuff lining her crop coming up when she bent over, , maybe the fungus lining her crop. Probably the banking soda flush is breaking it away. I feel to the baking soda is part of the answer if caught soon enough. Apparently Epsom salts are good as well.

pwand i def agree no hay or straw they mould to quickly and can also cause impaction i dont want you ending up with a blockage like i have now and seems the ones who get sour crop tend to have a slow digestion meaning the hay ect sits in the crop to long. the frothy vomit was what i experience with bombie on the canesten. its too scary i know but she recovered so try not to worry too much i think if she was going to suffer from the bubbling ect it would be pretty much instant. the nystatin is the best thing for her in my opinion so well done that husband of yours! lol the baking soda does seem to do good in small doses for sure but if i were you id stick with the nystatin now and if you need to vomit only do it before a dose cos you need that med sitting in the crop as long as poss and the emptyer the crop the more efficently it works. good luck hope this will work quickly for you and dont stop the nystatin until shes clear for at least 4 days or in my experience it reoccurs.

I have my Big Run all suited out in hay. So it's nice and fluffy and I don't get frost bit toes out there......

I'm going to keep an eye on my flock this winter I guess with what I've got. And next year I'll do leaf litter or something. The shavings get expensive for that size of run and to keep them deep enough to prevent frost bite. I was also thinking maybe I can just transfer the old ones from the coop into the run too during the summer months.

pwand, hope your bird is improving today....?

Shell, do you think I should continue the baking soda in the water? I'm thinking maybe for a few days after the start of nystatin treatment.

Bog: what I have done in the past was call a tree cutting service and ask for s truck load of chips without cedar. Here we have rain and its messy. We live in the rainforest. Girls were happy with that and the chips were free.

My hen I got up to lots of diarrhea, it looks to be improving, probably from yesterday's flush, I had also treated her for her second treatment of worms. She's eating now, waiting to go to the vet when they open. Bog: in case you haven't come across this in the threads, worms can also cause sour crop.

pwand personally i wouldt. id just do nystatin for the week and see where you are then. the baking soda seems to flush the whole digestive system and i think itll take the meds through the crop to fast not giving them time to work on the problem you want that nystatin to stay in crop as long as possible. if you think the soda is part of the sollution maybe just once a week for a good flush through but give the nystatin a week to get the infection under control first. you may see you wont need it. my fingers are crossed for you both. this is cureable so be positive .its lengthy but cureable. stick with it it takes a few days to see improvement. xx

Ok, I will stop the baking soda. What about another round of antibiotics? I'm just not sure. She still got diarrhea which i think is improving and I can hear her rumbling. She is spitting liquid up with her food.
