Our hens are in their 3rd summer and egglaying is dropping off. It is especially upsetting when they peck at or eat an egg, which has been happening with greater frequency now. Any suggestions to discourage this behavior?

It could be a few different problems: too little space, boredom, and not enough protein or other nutrients in the diet. Hens usually need 16 % layer feed, but you can bump them up to 20 % without any problem. Make sure they have a little crushed oyster shell or eggshells in case they need more calcium. I only have this problem if I have a bunch hanging around the coop with nothing to do. It also may be just a seasonal thing they are going through.
