The issue with the "good-looking foot" could be higher up, like a possibly broken leg. Could something have bitten off her toe (a rat?), causing her to jump off the roost and land wrong on the other leg, injuring it? I think that's what I would be looking for. Try cleaning off her bloody foot and keeping a little neosporin on it, and feeling the other leg for breaks. That's all the ideas I have. Maybe someone else can come up with another.

Good luck with her, and keep us posted.

I'm thinking along the same lines. I think something might have startled her in the middle of the night and she fell or jumped off the roost and landed wrong. I'd look for something higher up on the leg that she won't put weight on. For the other foot, try to keep the wound clean. I think you've done the right thing by keeping her in a small/isolated space. To keep her eating/drinking adequately keep the basement lights on the same amount if she was in her normal coop. Good luck.

thank you so much for replying.

perhaps a mouse came in the coop. that happens sometimes because if I forget an egg in there I've seen little holes in the eggs like happen if we have a mouse in the house and I leave the eggs on the counter. maybe a mouse startled her and she fell? if it is broken and I'm touching it would she flinch? I would think so, right?

I went down there and swabbed the wound and put ointment on it.

I tried to touch the leg she won't use and I tried to feel all the way up and she didn't flinch but I don't know what I'm feeling for in a break. I tried to get her to stand so I could get a better picture of what is going on and she will stand completely on the severed toe foot, but she won't stand on the other foot and she puts her wing down to try to prop herself up. but she just falls.

she is seeming to put a TINY little bit of weight on it this morning when I went to see her. she attempted to stand and had her leg under her instead of off to the side. I hope this is promising news.

if it is broken does anyone know how long it will take to heal?

Glad to hear she is doing a little better. No idea on how long. Depends on if its actually broke or just injured. If you can gently move it through the normal range of motion and it feels smooth, it is more than likely just injured. Good luck.

just went down to tend to her. when she tries to stand she keeps the foot in a fist like? and up down up down up down super fast in a row. not sure if its just giving way when she tries to stand and she keeps trying and that is why she is goinng up down up down up down. or if she has something neurological going on?

thoughts?
