HERE WE GO AGAIN Anyone SETTING Aug 30th - Sept 8th join me!!

What do you have in there holding the water? I know some people use sponges & washcloths with good success...

I have two wet sponges in there already and the water reservoir was full when I locked it down yesterday.

Would it be worse to open for a few seconds to add water or let the humidity continue to drop? I mean a drop from 75% to 57% and I know it will continue to drop unless I add water. I just don't want to injure the babies one way or the other.

So I asked DMRippy to send me more eggs. :) hubby doesn't know yet.

I had the one baby chick that I helped out on my hatch and it was sorta crippled. It couldn't bend it legs and kept it's head in the fetal position. Never could get off it's back and just made Circles on it's side. So I made a full body sling and we did PT(physical Therapy) all day yesterday. Hubby and I took turns. By evening that thing was so pooped. That is just slept in its Body cast. It was a mug with shoes on the bottom to keeps both feet planted and toilet tissue stuffed tight so it kept it's head up. Pretty much all it could do was bounce up and down. Well..today it is walking and running normal (except the head could be better.) It wasn't eating much from me. So I put it with mommy. I hope she shows him. ( I know it is a him now cause it was sex linked OE from DMRippy) I should not have helped it out. It layed in the bator drying off in the same position I pulled it out in and I think this is where I made the big mistake. It never got to strengthen it's muscles.

well, I have 3 more eggs just went into lock down. Good luck on all the babies in lock down. SOunds like a lot of silkies in this thread...

Amazing what a little time will do!! So glad he is up and running.

Edit: I think you need to change your signature...LOL.

I have the same problem during lockdown. I put in a "butter" tub with two sponges, fill the reserve but can never get it above 60 and then yes, slowly goes down a couple every 12hrs or so. Although, my last (first) batch hatched out okay, some reason I feel I need to still get it jacked up a little higher.
I have just now added another tub of water and will see what that will do.
I bought the incubator used and it works great but it did not come with any plugs.

Thinking I should find something to plug the holes, what do you think?

Wow Brookhaven how many babies do you have now? 3 more hatches! You and i have been on a few hatches together the last month or 2.I have 15 i am keeping of my last 5 hatches.guuuck.I have a nice tidy # of 8 grown hens... now all these.I have sold 4 babies and 3 more will go soon.I dont expect more than 3 if that from this hatch.Did a bad job of humidity this time the whole hatch.Too high too low a lot.Its my last for this year.Next spring i will use my own eggs!Hopefully better hatches

I have my 7 BR chicks (6 weeks) from my first hatch. The hatch after that was only a singleton RIR so I bought 2 Araucana and 1 Brahma mix as company for her. They are 2-3 weeks old. I have 3 Araucana eggs due to hatch this Saturday. I am praying that none of them have the double tufted gene because it is lethal at day 18 for some reason. Then I have 25 in my 2nd bator (Silkies, Marans and a WellSummer.) So as of today I only have 11 chicks. Thank the Lord I have 10 acres and can happily house all of them.

For those of you having problems with keeping the humidity up try using an old t-shirt. Wet the T-shirt and put it in there all crumpled up. The surface area of the T-shirt is larger than the sponges and will create higher humidity.

Can you add water using a straw or some kind of tubing through one of the vent holes? I have each of my bators rigged with a flexible size 8 French feeding tube taped to the inside edge and ran along the side and underneath the egg turner into the reservoir. I know some people have used aquarium tubing but i find the feeding tube works better because I can send it out through the little groove in the edge of the LG and it still keeps a seal, rather than rigging it up through one of the vent holes and having it there as a potential obstacle, or having to insert & remove each time I want to add water. Then I use an oral syringe attached to the feeding tube to add water and I do 10cc at a time. At this point though if you can use something to get water down in there without having to open the bator I think that would be the best way. Maybe others have some suggestions?

Sounds like ou havr had chickens a long time.Question...a friends hen just started laying 2 weeks ago. Now it went broody on the eggs she wondered if the could be fertile since she just started laying. She does have a roo of course.
Anyone else who knows please add your comment too.

Well, I don't know the answer, but I thought Roo's only 'got it on' with pullets that were ready, but I have some pullets who are about 6 weeks away from laying and Victor, the Magnificent (EE/RIR mutt, but shhhhhhhhhhh don't tell him, he thinks he's the most purebred of all birds) is already mounting the hens ..... practicing or the real deal, I'm not sure - but once those pullets start laying, I'm sure they will be fertile because Victor is mounting those girls every day (I hope 'mounting' is the correct terminology). Soooooo, with that being said, I'm sure there's a pretty high chance you'll at least have a couple of fertile ones in the bunch
