My last egg hatched!!! I literally hatched it myself but after 3 days she was too tired to do it herself.
I really though I was going to lose her, but she's out, eyes are open and she's happily drying off in the incubator!
7 out of 12 is my best hatch rate ever!
I got 4 splash and 3 black/dark blue!!!
Hopefully I get a roo this time

I would leave the chicks with Mom until you absolutely have to separate them. Maybe bring the broody's some fresh grass/weeds and let them show the chicks how to forage.
ya ive started putting them in the run when (the suns out) all the other chickens are free range , if i take the chicks will they start to lay again ?

That's why I ordered 36 of them....lol. 12+ from different people. The first lady sent 14. The second sent 18 (1 was busted in shipping) and I am waiting on the third set to come in. My daughter and I saw these and just had to have some. The way people talked the eggs were super small like robin eggs or so I thought. Both sets of eggs I have gotten were about the size of a silkie egg (B sized eggs) so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I get a few to hatch. The problem with Seramas is that, even if you do get them to hatch, they are so fragile that they often die within the first 2 weeks.
Wow that's a scary thing. I'll be looking forward to pictures of your babies.

And here are some pictures of the babies that did hatch...

You need to go to the store and by some Windex so you can wipe all the nose prints off the glass of your incubator...

Anybody know the color genetics of chicken breeding??

Like if you breed a splash x splash, what happens to the offspring? Will they still be BBS?

I have no idea. That will be my next research project. I remember making the little charts in high school science but failed that part miserably.

Thanks. I found this information on the internet :)

  • Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
    Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
  • Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
  • Black X Black = 100% Black
  • Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
  • Splash X Black = 100% Blue

^^
This is a great [and very informational] website about breeding and genetics if anyone else is interested. Now I just have to hope that my boys aren't all splashes and my girls aren't all black :)

And from the way it's looking, ending up with 10 chickens, 5 of them being splash I think I did pretty well :)
