QJ, today is day 25? Not sure if misting/cooling for 30 minutes for the next 3 days would help? FYI, my cayugas did not lose enough moisture and we know how that went for me this week. At least my one guy (who I opened up 46 hours ago) looks to finally be getting close to hatching.... definitely by tonight.

Let's see... I have to do math now.. lol. Day 28 is Monday so tmw is day 25. I'm a little concerned. I'll cool them off longer and see what happens.

Marty, Sebastopols aren't that easy to color ID at hatch. Whites are born with color on them. Until they dry and fluff there won't be a clue. Even then we won't really know until they feather out. It's the fun of the breed. Since they are from a mixed color flock there are a few possibilities for final color.
Day 25 and not enough moisture loss means they need double Collins at 20/30 min to get them in order. Wonky air cells should have been set angled and hand turned. If still wonky at hatch, it should be watched closely, but not helped unless 100% needed. Any helping should be done late and very slow and small.
Gotta go get the teen from school.

Well, just watered the babies. Everyone had their sip or two, and one of the weak ones really seemed to appreciate it, and so did Sqeeky (does the weird spelling drive you nuts?) I'll definately do it again. I know when I watered lucky, he came around much faster. Thanks for the sweet reminder, hatch buddy!

I sure hope the dewlaps do well for you. I'm very anxious for your success, Iain. it would be so cool to have them just do it on their own.

Thanks, Marty!! I feel kind of like when I was first learning how to have a relationship with my horses... I applied myself 100% and learned a ton in a short amount of time... enough to make me realize how very little I knew and how many years (if not a lifetime) it would take to develop true wisdom with them.

Erin's toulouse looks to be capable of internal pipping sometime today/tonight on its own. I moved it into the hatcher a little while ago.

It's been over 46 hours since I opened my cayuga up. All is well there. Can't wait to show pics when he finally emerges from the shell!

How long do the eggs with detached air cells have to be propped up? I know this sounds bad, but it's such a pain dealing with it because they don't fit well in the bator and one has already fallen over once! I even put them in the deeper hova hoping they would fit better. Maybe I need to do something different than the cardboard egg carton thingys because the eggs are too big and top heavy. -brain storms-

My air cells are too small and hatch day is Monday. I've stopped adding water and am at 30% humidity. Thoughts?

I really want these Sebs.

Also one air cell is wonky.. kinda like an ocean wave. Thoughts on that too.

RE the air cells, Iain's misting and 30 min cooling suggestion helped a LOT with my loss percentages. We'll see soon if I got it down enough (and in time), but my percentages did change to come much closer to the goal loss. If you're at about day 25, I was at roughly the same. Ah ha! I devised a genius contraption to keep the fatties from falling! You know those tootsie roll coin banks they have out at Christmas time? Yep, I stole my kid's bank and made a goose egg holder with it:

I have them in my hova, not my lg, and the top on the hova sits down in the bottom part, so it bumps he eggs leaning in the corners. I still have the eggs in the carton pieces, then those inside the tootsie roll bank holders lol

Papertowles rolled and taped to form a circle will hold goose eggs properly and allow ease of hand turning without bumping, rubbing and or falling. They also make great pads in empty space when eggs are on their sides and the bator rocks in an auto turner.

I keep rounds of foam available as spacers in the cabinet racks as needed, but the paper towels work the same when a buffer is needed or an angle is require.
