Heritage - Broad Breast crosses

Ok pics of my 2 View attachment 1340586 View attachment 1340585 View attachment 1340583 View attachment 1340584 ok some of those are a little fuzy..... she started laying at exactly 5 months. They were hatched 1st of nov and first egg was 2nd of April she has only missed 1 day since then. So 13 eggs out of 14 days is awesome, I am curious to see how long she will continue to lay.
She will continue to lay until she goes broody. How long before she goes broody will depend on whether or not you are allowing her to keep her eggs. Some hens can be discouraged from going broody by collecting their eggs daily in which case she may keep laying into October.

This is my first hen to survive to maturity so thank you for the wise words. I have been taking her eggs..... very tasty with toast. They seem pretty small still in comparison to ones I have gotten from friends to incubate

on the left is an egg from my darling 2 oz, the middle is an egg from a standard bronze about a year old 2.84 oz, and the one on the right is from another friend that has bbw that is older 4 oz.

Not all turkey hens (even ones of the same variety) lay the same size egg. Her eggs may or may not get larger as she gets older. Turkey eggs are wonderful in baked goods and make excellent custards.

Good luck.

I just used a bigger tom than the bbb. I switched some toms untill i got one able to mount her. That was all. Next year the largest siblings were selected again to ride some bbw and bbb.

Spudley is really adorable! My first attempt to incubate did not go well, eggs not fertile, none developed at all. I am not sure my hens are "participating in the breeding". Not sure my RP tom cares if they do or not! The hens are still laying, but I have to be on the spot to collect them. I have enough to incubate again but want to make sure they are fertile this time.

I have incubated most of my girls eggs and so far only 3 are developing. I just put 6 in over the weekend so it's a little early to say but still. 2 of hers are due may 27 and 1 June 2, so time will tell what we end up with

I have a Royal Palm Tom and I had purchased two broad breasted this March in order to butcher... one of them is for sure a hen and she chirps at my tom all the time (they are in a separate pen but can see each other). I was thinking about not butchering her and letting them do what comes natural to them as the current hen I have for him has deserted him for the Peacock that showed up on our property randomly. He has been pretty lonely since she left (she is still on the property but isn't in the pen as much, anymore. I even clipped her wings and she still managed to climb the fence to be with the Peacock).
Thank you for this thread, it reassures me that I might be able to get the BB and the RP to breed. I am picking him up a Royal Palm 1 year old hen today but this will give him more options in his harem. :)
