Hey southerners! Anyone else want to go wash oily birds?

Jmhappycowboy, that is scary and I bet your family is breathing a sigh of relief you didn't know you were holding!
And I agree, the flippant attitute that has appeared here is really irritating for a number of reasons.

I'd volunteer with the paper towels if it would really help!!!!!!!

It is a very bad situation with the oil spill, and the price of gasoline going up this week, and all the stuff that goes along with an oil spill. But this was a very tragic accident that cost 11 men their lives and I think instead of complaining about a few more cents at the gas pump more people should be praying for the families that lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. I'm sorry if this comes across as kind of short but my brother-in-law worked on that oil rig and he was scheduled to go back to work the very next day after the explosion so you can all imagine just how close to home this is to our family at this time, and you never know some of the men who lost their lives in this tragedy could have family members on this group and I am sure you can imagine how they would feel if they saw people complaining more about the cost of gas and making jokes about sopping it up with paper towels. Stepping off my soap box now and hope I didn't offend anyone.

Oh and volunteering to help with the animals. Great idea

Well I drive for a living, so the price of gasoline DIRECTLY impacts my take-home pay. Water is cheap, but I was still taught not to waste it.
Sorry if that comes across as short.

Yes it is very scary, and we are very thankful that he wasn't on the rig when the explosion occurred. And one of my brother-in-laws very good friends was on the rig when it happened and unfortunately he was one of the 11 that didn't make it. His memorial service was just today so I guess that is another reason that the flippant attitude sort of struck me the wrong way. Again i'm sorry if I offended anyone.

My best friend drives a lowbed for Jim's Towing here in CA and he picked up a boat in Port Hueneme, all he was told is that it was for that oil slick. He left this afternoon and is somewhere between CA and LA now. So if you see a white with red trim semi with a boat heading east on I 40 that's him. The US Navy has a base and the Seebees are based out of Port Hueneme so who knows what all it's going to do. I talked to him while he was waiting on them to crane the boat onto his rig. I think he could use a few prayers to help get him there safe and sound with a lil haste.

While the enthusiasm is appreciated, be aware that Venice La is at the very end of a (one)single hwy. As such right now it is not easy to get in or out of. Very limited or no accomodations at all. At this point I would even go so far as to say, they ain't space left to park a camper. I have "once removed" family in the Venice/Boothville La area, came to my home yesterday morning, normal drive time is about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, yesterday the drive was 5 hours. You have marsh bounded by levee on the west side and Ms river bounded by levee on the east, total width of the "dry land" at places is less than 1/4 mile

This situation is much like the Katrina response in that area, lots of people want to help, but thier is a limit to how many rescue/clean up people that can be usefully supported/employed in that area.

My advice would be to check out coastal areas in Ms, Al, and Fl in the end I think the impact of the spill is going to be far greater in those states that it is in La. If you look at a map, the rig was offshore of La officially, but actually south of Biloxi MS, Mobile Al.

Also you guys might want to send up a prayer for calm seas. High winds from any direction will hinder any work.

I got to agree with jim cowboy. Right now every one in La is only a few steps removed from somebody that was either on the rig or lost on the rig.

edited to add----

every one from Ms, Al, Tx and La are only a few steps removed------- the guys that work offshore come from all over---------

if i lived closer i would be there already

i will just wait for it to happen here in the chesapeake bay. which is inevitable with this new offshore drilling plan.

As a side note to the oil spill I was reading that the price of chicken feed might go up because of the manhadden fish by products in the feed. They are expecting a fish kill because of this. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Hope they can get it stopped asp.

I live on the gulf coast of florida, if there becomes any need here, I'm all over it! Makes me sick to think what is happening. To hell with the price of gas. I know its important, it matters to us as we are paycheck to paycheck. But the ramifications of this is going to take years to see! think of all the ocean wildlife, and the gulf has the best! we have fishes, whales, dolphins, birds. Just sickens me.

twentynine, there is a center being set up in Theodore, AL which I'm not familiar with but appears to be part of Mobile

I have family in Mobile and we have a beach house down there. A couple people could possibly stay with me so we don't all die of hotel bill-itosis, if that will help.
I'm going to call the hotline today and see what I can find out.
