Chirping
I'm a 18 year old with my first flock! I've always liked the idea of owning chickens for awhile now but always hesitated. After getting my own place and a steady job, I finally took the dive and built the coop.
Currently, I have 19 chickens that an acquaintance gave to me after deciding they didn't have time for the chicks. I had 21 but there's a fox that I can't manage to scare off. I know for a fact that I have some Japanese Bantams but haven't gotten a definite answer what breed most of them are. I think I have a Bantam rooster just based how different he looks compared to the ones I know are hens but I'm not too sure.
While my flock is still too young to produce eggs yet, I'm very excited for when they do! But even without the benefit of fresh eggs, there's a certain peacefulness that comes from watching them walk around the yard and it's always nice to watch them get excited when they see me.
My job has me working from home most days and I'm really enjoying picking up new "homemaking" hobbies. I cook daily and bake bread almost weekly. I'm considering starting a garden and/or a compost pile and canning is starting to catch my eye.
I'm the oldest out of four children and while we've always lived in the suburb for most of our life, we moved out to the country for the final years of high school. After graduation, I decided I liked the more laidback country life and cancelled my plans to move to a different state. Besides, I'd really miss my family if I moved to far away. Aside from my chickens, I have a cat named Freya and a rescue labradoodle named Buddy.
While I've been checking here for info about chickens since I started plans for my coop, I was a bit too shy to join. But everyone seems really nice and passionate about their chickens, so I hope we can get along!
