Congrats on starting your new chicken adventure! Silkies are usually sold as straight run (mixed boys and girls) so hopefully you end up with a pullet if you're wanting eggs. I like to raise my chicks with a heating pad instead of a heat lamp. It's so much healthier and natural when chicks are exposed to the cooler room temperature air and only receive heat when they choose it, and can also sleep quietly through the night and have empty crops in the morning. WELCOME! Yes, silkies are great! They do go broody often, so not as many eggs as sourland said. I used to hatch them often. The one up front is a Showgirl.
