Hi, joined looking for answer.

My fertile eggs felt heavier and less liquidy than the non fertile ones. One or two I helped out as I think with the dry hot spells we've been having in the UK the shell and membrane were pretty hard for them the break through.
Hope Sue and baby/ies do great :D

The baby hatched! It looked so fragile. At first Sue pecked it, I was afraid she'd go crazy and kill it. But then she lifted her wing and let it crawl under her. Is it normal for the hen to do that?

OK update and more questions. She pecked the chick after we closed the door to the coop. She pecked it very badly.... Why? I took the rest of the eggs because to my surprise one is starting to crack open and 2 others are making a lot of noise! Was that wrong? I have them under a heat lamp for now and getting ready to get water and feed ready for them. I have raised chicks before but what about Sue? I went back out and she grabbed my shoe!

I personally wouldn't have taken the eggs at this crucial time. The broody regulates the humidity during the hatch. Can you pop them back under her? She's pecking you , because you are interfering with her eggs.

I just came back in from putting them back. She only got me once. I called the lady who gave me the chicks (that was last fall) she told me to put them back and let Sue take care of them, that sometimes the hen just reacts with fear at first, but they know what to do. Seems right, it just was such a kick in the guts to have seen that poor little chick. I am hoping for the best.

Just to add to the last one, 3 of my 4 children got to watch the chick hatch. They are only ages 3 (twins boy and girl) and 2, but it seemed to have a big impact as they kept telling me Sue was having a baby like mommy had baby Lukey! Luke is 7 months old.
