Hiding chickens from HOA-gone rogue!!

Ok being from a small place in Canada. What does HOA stand for?

It stands for Home Owners Association.
Basically it's a neighbor hood where not only city, county, state, and federal laws apply but a bunch of additional rules so everyone lives in sweet harmony. Oh and you pay dues so people can tell you how to live.

Many have rules about landscaping, breeds of dogs, type of roofing, colors of paint, fencing, etc etc etc.

Not my idea of living, always being in fear they will find something amiss and fine you.

Pretty much if you have chickens the hood will know because chickens DO make noise.
Not worth breaking the rules in my opinion.

I’ve inquired into what it would take to change that ordinance. Half of the neighborhood and there’s over 2000 people. my neighbors and I have tried. Even the members on the board think it’s a dumb ordinance. Or at least that’s what they said at a meeting I went to and brought it up.
Not sure if this is taboo, as I’m a newbie, but there are communities on Reddit that deal with issues like this. Maybe give them a browse....

Don’t forget they can put a lien on your property!! No thank you sir/ma’am!
I don’t know if you hear the HOA can put a lien on your property. But I do believe they can get law-enforcement involved if they sent notices and fines. I lived in HO a and hey soon as my lease was up I got as far away as I can. There were lots of things that need to be repaired but they were more worried about looking over your hair 5 foot fence to notice you didn’t rake your backyard this week and Slap you with a fine. They tried to find me $50 because I left my daughters bike near our house overnight one night. If I were you I would look more into what it would take to get the rules changed. Or move if you don’t own the home and definitely check the HOA in the next location

You know the rules and choose to break them... nothing honorable about that whether we agree or disagree. So many people get their animals anyways and then cry poor me when accountability comes knocking. :smack

Yes moving is hard... it's part of life. Don't buy or rent from someone you can't agree to their terms. That essentially makes you a liar... you agreed to the terms but are reneging on YOUR word... that YOU signed a contract over. Very irresponsible and immature. Not even... oh I didn't realize the rules and already got them now what... but I KNEW the rules and CHOSE that my rights matter more than anyone else's in the community. Not once but twice.

YES, I think HOA's are a PITA (pain in the arss)... and would not choose to live in one because I DON'T agree with their rules... We even look to moving to other states when we don't agree with the stupid laws they make.. BUT I live in California and TRY to abide because I love it here... and I love my neighbors.

No, I am NOT perfect in any way... BUT I will NEVER encourage anyone to break the law. Doing what is right feels good... I encourage you... forget that HOA... and start looking to a place where you can enjoy your life in peace! There are ways... if you own, rent to someone else... who hopefully won't pay you back by having animals you tell them they can't inside your home. If you rent, start looking for another place that is suitable... don't have money to move? But got money to buy chickens... it's all about priorities.

BTW... it the NOT the HOA who is gone rouge... it is the tenant who thinks they should be above accountability. :hmm

Sorry if I come of harsh... people who only think of themselves and take advantage of homeowners (or in this case HOA) and HIDE their animals. :rant

Anyways, seriously... we are here to support each other as BYC'ers even if we don't always agree. :hugs

I hope you can resolve this with the least amount of stress and drama possible! :fl

HOA!
Really sounds like something I would not want to be a part of. Just my opinion. I likely wouldn’t fit in to that type of life style. I like a bit of independence.
I thank everyone for their replies.

Yes SOME HOAs are about arbitrary rules to promote peace, but often they are also about funding common utilities/projects. By collecting dues things like road plowing and trash collection in rural areas or on private roads can happen. I lived somewhere with an HOA that was able to bring in high speed internet because we had the buying power of many vs. just one customer. Any HOA has it's cons, but there is good that can come of them too. Just be aware of the rules and what level of control you can and cannot live with.

It helps to talk to residents also if possible before moving into hoa. Mine was terrible. The parking lot was falling apart to the point it couldn’t be plowed if the called have that happen. But the would walk the area 3 times a day and hand out fines for not having your hose on the proper reel:rolleyes:
But my mothers hoa gets roads plowed ASAP, had roads sealed and repaved when needed and takes care of trees limbs that could damage. Some hoas allow chickens cause they don’t consider them livestock. I didn’t want to chance it personally when I purchased the house I live in now Don’t think any hoa would allow the army of pink flamingos I have in my front yard :D I love tacky. Lol
