Interesting ideas, but have you thought about this:

Would teachers only get December off? School is only 36 weeks now, Jan. thru Nov. would be 46 weeks (taking December and 2weeks). Could kids stand school for that long?

I agree IF everyone would pay their property taxes.

Who would teach these classes? If school teachers this means, they would be with the students from 8am -8pm? When do parents get to educate? Other countries do this and have high test scores, so this is an option.

While I agree that athletics should be a privilege and they must keep a GPA (required at my school "C" my team "B"), you must have the necessary skills to perform the task. I had a very smart girl with a good GPA on my middle school team. She lacked the size and skill to play. I kept her as statistician with all the team privileges including practice with the team, but did not let her play. When I stopped coaching the team, the next coach let her play. She rubbed it in my face until she got injured by a slide tackle. Now she can't play any sports which is sad because she was a very good runner. She now understands that I was trying to protect her. Now she is big enough to play and would have the skills, if she were to have not played in middle school.

We already have programs in place for afterschool programs, but again do teachers work a 12 hr day? Do they get overtime? I would rather spend that time with my boys.

I like the voucher plan, I don't think private school's would though. Would they be able to screen students like they do now?

It probably sounds like I'm being picky, but I have thought about some of these things as well and these are the responses I run into.

Teachers cannot teach without discipline (not punishment, but discipline). Do you agree?

I have always said that I could never be a "regular" ed. teacher. This is why.

Awesome idea, but what happens if they lose it? How many do they get to lose? get stolen?

Nice! What about football season? 10 weeks out of the year (on average) Do you play when school is out? Practice? Would you want to play if all of your friends were out of school?

Love school uniforms, they solve so many more problems than they create. I think teachers should wear uniforms too. (that way I don't have to pick out my clothes every day

I use this all of the time to motivate students to learn.

I homeschool my kids... so I felt the need to post.
Some people tell me they think it's wonderful that I homeschool my children. Others tell me I'm sheltering them too much. (I usually get a little defensive on this topic.)
I believe that if you are providing opportunities for your children to learn & grow and they are happy & accepting of the homeschool environment, it's a win/win situation.
As far as socialization is concerned, my kids have outside-the-home activities in clubs, at the YMCA, and playdates with other children. My son is shy and doesn't warm easily to others - it's his personality, NOT because he's homeschooled. My daughter, on the other hand, is SUPER friendly and will initiate social interaction with ANYONE!
I don't think much can be done to "fix" public schools that have problems. Some schools are just fine. I just wanted to homeschool during elementary years.
I'd send my kids to private school, but the only one near me is the Catholic school & is rather expensive, especially if you're not Catholic. I'm not Catholic. I just can't afford to pay for private school & public school. We pay a couple thousand in school taxes & our local elementary school never seems to have enough money. My children tell me they are happy with homeschooling and both are academically ahead of their public-schooled peers.

Every child would get one. at a set price for every broken, lost or "stolen" laptop they would have to pay an increased price. If there is a legitamate (police report must be present) stolen laptop then the school would provide a new one at the rate at which they were paying with no increase. Also laptops would have a locator that the school or company they are through would be able to aide police in finding them or students in finding them.

If you love the game then it wouldn't matter if your friends were out of school. Extracurricular means that it is in addition to your schooling not part of it. At the beginning of the season you get a schedule with games and practices you either attend or you don't.

Schools would also have green houses or vegtable gardens and gardening/cooking/basic living classes are required for grades pre-k thru 12th. They would teach things about healthy living, making am menu, budgets, paying bills, health insurance, car insurance. All the types of things adults must do in order to be good citizens. I hate it when kids are thrown out into the world with out knowing what is expected of them.

You have great ideas, we should email them to the new Secretary of Education. I hate the fact that our students are sent out into the world without "life skills". We had classes for such things in my day, but due to cuts in school budgets, we can't offer those today.

Productive people stand a job for 50 or 51 weeks a year... No reason not to get them used to the idea that life comes with responsibility.

It will not be every kid that needs the boost to get caught up.... rotate teachers through those classes and pay them overtime to do it. Most children would be keeping a regular schedule...If at some point they fall behind and have to go through the catch upo program they will be less likely to fall behind again...

I don't think any sport activity that requires "special skills" should be allowed in the public school system. Nothing like teaching elitist ideals in public schools... Ever wonder why highschool students are segregated into popular, not so popular, and nerds? It is because the policy like needing special skills to do this activity or that.... Those types of sports teach them nothing that will help them in the real world... sure they may get a scholarship into college, but then what...if they even get an education while playing sports in the 4 years it is over and they have to find a job just like everybody else.....and then they are equal to every other qualified candidate for the jobs they seek.

Why not? They are a private school and the 75% public tuition funding is just a tuition credit for students that don't use the public school system.

The public scohols here in columbus offer vouchers to public schools like columbus school for girls (cost 16k a year for starters). It works good but it just isn't enough.

If kids are to be in school from 8a-8p every day, year round, they certainly need classes on life b/c they will only be home in time to eat & go to bed. I think that parents should be teaching things like that to the children, maybe having those classes as an elective in later highschool years would be good, but not required as curriculum.

I don't think the problem is amount of time spent-I think if classes were smaller and more divided into skill/ability level, much more could be done in the amount of time already allotted. So much time is wasted, coming from home and going into a public school, it really disgusted me how much of time was spent waiting-in line, waiting for a paper, doing busy work like a crossword puzzle assigned by the teacher, waiting for an ill-behaved student to be reprimanded, all non-productive time. I was shocked by the amount of busywork given that teaches absolutely nothing and bored to tears overall (except for during lunch, lol!). I totally disagree that we need longer school days, especially for the K-lower elementary grades, the day is plenty long enough already. Ask any K-1-2nd teacher!

When I was in Germany in the 70's, the kids went to school at 7:30/8:00 and didn't get home until 5:00/5:30. The kindergarten which is 2 years old thru 5 years old went from 8:30 to 4:30 and they were taught, not just play time. My daughter went to Germany school from the time she was 2 until she was 4....she says that is why she was so bored in US schools, because she knew it all already....
