Honey

as far as alergies go... for local you want the bees to be harvesting from the same kinds of plants that grow where you are... you're looking for the same sorts of pollen as you'd be exposed to.
so if the honey producer is in a similar environment to yours, 30 miles should work.
or you could get your own bees...

Well, now that you said that, the "local" honey that I found is in the same area where I work. I work 30 miles away from home. I am in this area 5 days a week and sometimes on the weekend, so I am exposed to the pollen in this area.

Get my own bees? I'm afraid of bees.

That is pretty good. The closer the better. And just to be clear it is actually where the hives are and what/where the bees are feeding. See the idea is that by consuming local honey you tend to be eating what youare allergic to. Kind of like getting a vaccination. It helps you build an immunity.

It seems to me that any bread dough that you use honey in is more moist. I've been substituting it in a lot of recipes lately. I love honey. Also, I have a recipe for honey strawberry jam that is FANTASTIC on a biscuit with cream cheese. It is sweet and tart, yum!

NO REASON to fear bees just respect them. I find them SO amazing and interesting. I mean talk about amazing, If the queen dies or leaves (swarm) within 24 hours the entire colony knows. They communicate by dance and scent. OK off my soap box sorry I just really like to talk about my girls (bees).

I was tested for allergies a few weeks ago and seems like I am severely allergic to everything. The allergist suggested weekly allergy shots for 3 years and I refused. So, I am looking for an alternative and I think local raw honey will help me.

I was too.
BIG bug phobia.
HUGE! like Call My Hubby to deal with the BUG kind of huge. like Leave The HOUSE if there was a bug kind of HUGE!

and then I moved to Anza in the CA high desert. I started seedlings for my garden, and there were fruit trees in the yard. In the six weeks the fruit trees were in bloom, I saw MAYBE six or seven bees... the whole CCD situation was really bad and there were NO local bees to polinate the trees, and so no fruit. I decided if I was going to have any produce in my garden, I was going to have to supply some bees.

time to get over myself on the bee front.

ordered equipment and a box of "package bees". read a couple books and watched lots of videos on youtube while I was waiting for them... got them here and installed in their box. terrified of course...

I'd armor up in all by bee gear and go stand and watch them for an hour or so a day from a nice safe distance. like 30 feet away. standing, of course, instead of sitting just in case I had to run. and then a little closer... and eventually sitting right next to the box. they're quite fascinating really, they do all manner of interesting things.

and a year later I was collecting wild swarms and doing cutouts of bees that were living in people's walls and garages...

I wouldn't know where to start to try to get some.

local bee club...

for me, the nearest one was 50 miles away, but if you've got a local honey seller, ask them, they'll know. or they may be happy to teach you too!

Awwwww, thanks for the encouragement. You really have me thinking now. You have provided very useful information on how to get started. How many bees would I need to get started? It is only me in my househould, so I would only need enough honey for just me and my daily doses and to sweeten my foods.
