Why? About to order from them and thought to check on here.Hoovers is a hatchery to avoid if possible.
Their birds, especially barred rocks, are often extremely far from the breed standard, and I've heard many tales of the wrong birds, large quantities of 'sexed' orders being male, etc. Why? About to order from them and thought to check on here.
Thanks!Their birds, especially barred rocks, are often extremely far from the breed standard, and I've heard many tales of the wrong birds, large quantities of 'sexed' orders being male, etc.
Yet this thread has plenty of posts from people who were satisfied with Hoovers.Their birds, especially barred rocks, are often extremely far from the breed standard, and I've heard many tales of the wrong birds, large quantities of 'sexed' orders being male, etc.
I believe a mix of each. I haven't ordered from them myself, but am just recounting what I've heard.Yet this thread has plenty of posts from people who were satisfied with Hoovers.
Are those stories from people who got the chicks shipped directly to them, or who bought the chicks in a store that ordered from the hatchery? I've heard plenty of stories of wrong chicks from Tractor Supply Company, and I usually assumed the mixup happened in the store, not at the hatchery.
I've both gotten chicks from stores (TSC & Cal-Ranch) and direct from Hoover's. I haven't had these problems. I've gotten nice healthy birds of the correct sex and breed, except for one possible exception--out of over 100 chicks! That's a pretty good record! Before blasting any one hatchery, I'd expect some documentation to substantiate. I don't have a personal or financial interest in any of the hatcheries BTW.I believe a mix of each. I haven't ordered from them myself, but am just recounting what I've heard.
I wouldn't expect breed standard from a commercial hatchery, and are the "tales" verified in any way?Their birds, especially barred rocks, are often extremely far from the breed standard, and I've heard many tales of the wrong birds, large quantities of 'sexed' orders being male, etc.

This picture is copied from a BYC thread a while back, but I saved it to use as an example of poor coloring.View attachment 2564178
This is a 'barred plymouth rock' from Hoover's. @MarkJr also has some with .....interesting.......coloring, but I can't seem to find the thread or apparently the member anymore? @Overo Mare any idea what happened with him?
