Please advise. I have an 8 week old ameraucana who has been trilling a lot and getting more anxious. In addition, I have a buff orp and silver laced Wyandotte. I moved them outside yesterday, which I thought was contributing to her hot temper and crankiness, but now that I started to read more threads, I wonder if she may be a he. She has always been bigger (im assuming shes a bit older than the other 2). ;) Any info would be appreciated! Keep you fingers crossed for news of an egg-laying future.

How on earth does one post a pic? They are in my profile if you are able to access those. Oops.

Well as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you may ought to know is that ameraucana does not look pure, meaning it's probably a common easter egger which is anything crossed with an ameraucana or similar bird. There's a lot of barring and pure ameraucanas don't have barring as far as I'm concerned. If it doesn't already have a red comb or a red comb that's bigger then the other female's comb then it's probably female. Males tend to develop red combs very early in the chick stage and hens usually don't get red combs until they're laying age or closer to it.

I thought that may be the case with her heritage. The hatchery said they were ameraucanas, but as I've read I was wondering. Thank you for the info. She does not have a red comb, and I'm happy to hear that this would be present if she was a he. Thanks again
