Horses I HATE THE 4th!

Quote:
We had an appendix QH stallion last year, the half brother to my Black Jack, he was probably the MOST flightiest horse we had. He was even born next to the turkey shoot/firing range, but still I think it was the TB dam that put that extra bit of "spirit" into him. Last year when we did our display off the pasture fence, he jumped and leapt about 15 feet. He wanted to run, but he realized all the other horses were still grazing.. So he walked back to the herd and went back to grazing himself.

It's no fun to run, when the other horses aren't. LOL

That's great your geldings were able to help your friend's horse out with it's phobia. It helps to desensitize them. When training my horses, I try my best to come up with the most "scary" distraction I can and bring it into the round pen with me. From flags to tarps to someone firing a weapon nearby.

It takes some work to desensitize them, but I know that if I was ever riding and something unexpected happens, my horse won't be the one tearing down the trail while I'm plopped on the ground. LOL

I had one horse, you could set a firecracker off under her hooves and the worst she would do is flinch and move a few feet. Her ONE and WORST weakness..... cows.. SHE HATED THEM!!! LOL I think it's the way they stare as you ride by.. Kinda freaks me out too..

I think everyone understands that when they said "I hate the 4th" they honestly meant " I hate fireworks." But, thanks for clarifying.

My horses dont mind it. ..they're used to every possible commotion. My sheep went to the far end of their pasture and stayed there..they werent too thrilled about it..but when it was over and i went to check on them they forgot all about it and came looking for food lol. I just realized a few minutes that the lgds are awol though sigh. They got popped on the butt this spring with snake shot for killing chickens..the fireworks must have made them think of that and they high tailed it! Im sure they're just hiding out somewhere and will be back in the morning.

Fireworks are legal out here as long as they arent too close to a house or unharvest crop. The neighbors have been shooting them off for a week or longer now lol. We never shoot off very many. We work too hard for every buck to see too many of them go up in smoke! But my grandbaby was here this weekend so we had to make sure he got to enjoy some fireworks. Hes 17 months so he got a big kick out of it!

Dave and Kim and everyone else, SOrry I wasn't trying to offend you. Its actually my BDAY! LOL I love what the 4th "stands" for. I hate the fireworks. I have a horse rescue, MANY have serious past issues. Not to mention the totally wild MUstangs OFF THE range that doesn't help. It also doesn't help that the people shoot them off aimed over our large pastures! Its FL and its DRY and they can HEAR our livestock running hard and fast. Its very obvious. Last year we had Wild Mustangs in freshly gathered and they ran thru fencing. Its a HUGE mess. I just wish people would do it at a lake or place where people and animals are not. Its very VERY dangerous to be out there soothing the horses. I just hate the drinking and partying and fireworks until 2 am.

Well there is much to be said for being a responsible fireworks enthusiast. Ditto the drinking/partying. When those things cant be brought togeter then, yes, there is cause for alarm. Apology accepted and a big huggaroo. Too bad you couldnt talk about this with the folks beforehand. Maybe they could shoot them the other way....

I'm with you. I do NOT think people died so future generations could shoot off fireworks, get drunk, or throw a party. And I find it hard to believe that if our founding fathers were still around, they'd be very pleased by the way some of us choose to "remember" what they sacrificed so much to give us. You'd be amazed (or maybe you wouldn't) at the number of people who don't know who we are actually supposed to be remembering and what they actually did, as in civil disobedience that cost many, many of them their homes, their families, and even their very lives.... Call me foolish but I don't think shooting off firecrackers would have made it onto their list of the freedoms they were dying for!

edited to add that around here there are actually public service announcements explaining to people that if you shoot into the air, that bullet has to come down somewhere, and people can and do get hurt from their spent ammo. It is against the law and shooters will be arrested for it. They actually have to tell people this? Whatever happened to common sense?!? California is on FIRE and still they shoot off fireworks? Is our whole nation on crack or something?!?

I am happy to say everyone here stayed calm. My mustang never flinched, but I think he is pretty used to loud noises, there tends to be a lot of target practice around here, and even more, we have been building a chicken coop and the nail gun has been banging away all week. The goats were acting like maniacs, but I think if was just more of an excuse to act crazy than true fear. Chickens could have cared less. Plus, the neighbors cut out the fireworks early this year, so we even got a good night's sleep.
