How About a Jumbo Co Op

Well, you know, I can see how someone might get a little bitter, or frustrated, or whatever, when someone says the biggest coturnix only get to be 10-12 oz at full size, so she puts a picture of a 6 week old bird on the scale that already weighs 12oz, and they still say it can't be done.

(Somewhere on a different thread, I think)

I felt like pounding MY head on the wall, and I was just a spectator.

I am going back and trying to find the post where I saw Buttercup announce that she would be calling a line she had Egyptian Golds. I remember reading it when I first came on and tried to read as much archives as I could. Buttercup did state back in that post that she intended to do so (create this name on this mutation) in post. I am trying to find it and read the argument or debate.

As I am reading this I am trying to understand that Buttercup is trying to attach a name to a mutation that has come up from her lines that she believes carries a color, body type, and in some cases a lethality to it. Sort of a warning card to add to the ever growing quail calculator so to speak????

Lets turn this around into an education.

I'd hate to see someone's hard work go undone for the sake of arguement over a name. I agree, the names can be misused (for instance those A&M marketing schemes, when the birds were really English White).. some names make me giggle and think of my own .... but lets take into consideration what is being attempted seriously, and the generosity.

I admit, I felt like I was looking at an italian when I looked at the picture (buttercup's avatar..if that is one of her egyptian golds). But now I understand that Buttercup is telling a behind the scenes breeding selection issue(s) story about WHY she is calling birds under different names.

I see both sides. I see the wonder at "why deviate from standard names and their mutations".... I see people interested in keeping your line alive Buttercup. It sounds as if it could die out, and it could be an old line of larger birds that SHOULD be kept reproducing and improving. With the warnings or names that indicate warning. That can all be sorted out in an algorythm (family tree chart of sorts). Buttercup's names are Buttercup's names for her work. We just work with her and together (remember the word CO-OP) create the better beautiful standards.

I get it. I think. I am encouraged and want to see and be part of this history. We are fortunate to have the people and resources here we have. And so we will have questions.

I am proud of my colleagues here. Each with thier opinions and input.

Buttercup, you have done a good thing by passing on the lines. Period. You should be proud. People who took on her work and agreed to improve upon it, thank you. I look forward to seeing you carry on someone's hard work with your own hard work. I will invest in that. I promise. I will pay it forward as you have.

Respectfully,
Tonya

Well I have 3 running around my hatcher\\bator, play'in soccer with the other eggs. 2 eggs were marked (2) and 1 was a (6). If memory serves, those were browns and the golds were 4 and 5's.... pips everywhere so I should have a brooder full by morning too. They are start'in just a little early.... Come on golds !! Bill

I now have 7 in the brooder all fluffy, still all browns....

I would feel like pounding my head on a wall myself if I had birds that weighed that much and everybody kept saying that I could not achieve this.

Who said there is no 12 ounce coturnix? I even have some a bit bigger. I have never seen a strain that will produce one pound plus birds every time, but when ya'll find it I'll be first in line for eggs. About the Egyptian Gold, I would call it what ever you want so long as it doesn't mislead people which in your case I don't see why it would. The A&M thing is getting old, but I don't really understand why everything needs to be so complicated in the quail calculator, tricky little birds.

But I was never trying to be bitter by asking how you got that name, just curious. There are a lot of mutations out there, and I sure don't mind more...

I don't think it's too late - I was dealing with car problems and crashes and computer crashes for a month, but I tried to at least keep up with reading the posts on breaks and lunch at work, and I don't think anybody said there is an official list for the coop itself that's been closed now.

I had decided to try coturnix again, even though my earlier tries were not successful, because there seemed to be so much more information available.

Last year I spent every spare minute reading, and raising, and quail egg shopping, and working on trying to weigh and sort and select breeders - but by the time winter came, I had to quit hatching them in the house, didn't have anything set up outside yet, couldn't stand the thought of the eggs from the best ones just 'going to the dogs' so I started playing with the idea of sending some out for the cost of postage to people who could hatch now, and they could send me some later on.

It's SO hard to go from full speed ahead zero

I had caught on that Buttercup has really big birds, but I kept reading her tagline that said "Sorry, I do not sell eggs or birds.", (and thinking, well, can't really blame her, with some people who don't believe what's right in front of their eyes) so I was hoping she would chime in with advice, and when she offered to send out some eggs, I was just amazed. But she was only doing a limited number of sets.

I ran out of superlatives at the thought of getting some of her big birds. If I could hatch thousands of birds at a time, I could make faster progress, but I can't do that, so when she said she would send me some eggs from her birds - euphoria set in

That was just at the thought of getting big brown birds. Then I found out about the colors.

Now I'm going to have to look up words for something better than phenomenal, euphoric, exquisite...

Thanks again, Buttercup

Buttercup, this is the list that I was trying to bring up the other day, but I guess I hit a general quote, instead of quoting your post.

I'll try to post this on the co-op page, and PM some of the folks.

I don't know if there is a way to keep it current, or if there is much of a plan, I hope to be able to keep up with things now, at least a little bit

Thanks for all your help Buttercup Chillin

I had mentioned that I'm technologically challenged, and a very slow typist, and have limited time, but for those that missed it, here it is again.

I don't know if there is some official plan, but you have put us light years ahead by sending out your eggs, and I just can't tell you how grateful I am.

Man, I'm sure glad that I don't raise coturnix. Always with the "drama". I'm a bobwhite dude, so I don't see all the colors that Coturnix people do. I see white ones, and brown ones, and some lighter brown ones, and some kinda reddish ones. I also have a hard time callin' something "jumbo" that's slightly larger than a fat sparrow. One thing's for sure though, most of these Coturnix threads get locked up quick 'cause it seems like a prerequisite to being a coturnix breeder is bein' half bat-$#it crazy, lol! These threads are always certainly entertaining, and a wonderful example of the human psyche altered by little birds.
