Yes hear all about them , only ones I have seen are whites that are the same size as the English Whites I got back in 1964.

I feel so sorry for you, my Jumbo Browns and even the Jumbo M. Golds are at least 2X the size of the Browns our friend raised in the late 70's. And they aren't ready to fly yet.

Why feel sorry for me.....I only raise the Snowflake Bobs now......If I could find some true 1 lb coturnix , i may raise them....they are as easy to raise as weeds. turn 100 into 1300 in 6 weeks....They also sell around here for .50 to 1.00 for 6 week old birds

Edited because somehow I managed to click quote, then post.

Didn't really have anything to say. Just didn't want to leave a post that was nothing but a quote.

I suppose we could take the size of the ostrich, the webbed feet and water repellent characteristics of a swan, the growth rate of a quail (and its looks, of course), and the pink of a flamingo and mix it all together.

It would be a Pink Mute Ostrich Quail. My basement would be quieter, but it might smell worse.

Take THAT Moby quail. We've got OSTRICH quail.

What I had in mind was trying to find as many people as possible with the largest birds available now, to try to get as large a gene pool as we could muster, to trade with or buy and sell eggs and birds from trusted sources.

I'm sure most of you didn't see my egg auction that I did last week, or so, but I'll copy/paste the main part of it.

""I've been buying eggs all spring and summer from anybody that sounded credible about having bigger birds, but the biggest bird I have weighed so far is a white one that's 13 1/2 oz. I only kept the largest ones of each group. In my three biggest pens one pen has mostly whites, with 3 goldens, I have another pen with mostly whites from a different source and a few goldens, and another pen with the biggest ones of several groups hatched during the summer, with whites, browns, and goldens in that pen. Then there are a couple 'almost as good' pens, and various cull pens.

Hubby said it was time to quit hatching - I talked him into letting me set one last tray of button quail eggs, but now I have all my wonderful coturnix eggs that I hate to eat or sell for food - I get plenty from the cull pens for that.""

The people talking about genetic limits seem to be overlooking the fact that since there is even a jumbo strain around, we have that proof that the genetic limits don't limit us to having natural size birds.

Think about how small the wild ones are.

Hi, I want Jumbo giant Moby quail - it sounds like you are way ahead of the game compared to most of us.

I tried to do an online search for that Agi newsprint from 2005, and haven't been able to find anything - do you have a link for it?

I was amazed by the thought of eggs in 6 weeks, and 300 eggs a year, so I tried coturnix a few decades ago when the only ones available around here were probably all wild size birds, but they drowned, or got chilled, or hatched with wry neck or crooked legs, or worse, and I gave up.

Now that there is more of a reward for successfully raising them - half as much trouble to make a meal, and better equipment, and instant online access for problem solving, mine did the cockroach thing this summer, and even though a 6oz bird is just as yummy as a 12oz bird, I'm still going for the 'bigger is better' plan if you want more than eggs.

I haven't started to look for padding for the eggs yet for mailing. Need to go to Hobby Lobby or such to find some foam to cut slits or holes in.
There are a few others before you on the list, too.

Just get you some chukar flats. Bubble wrap. toilet paper, rubber bands, and a flat piece of cardboard to go on top.

Anyone that has received eggs from me should be able to recreate my shipping model, that should be able to withstand a level 2+ shipping accident.
