You guys are terrible and trying to get me in trouble. I find enough of that on my own.
Riverotter, you must like working. Trust me they will be enough work without extra. They are going to keep you busy just trying to figure out what to do with all the eggs. You do realize you are going to end up with several cages to keep clean. Buy a plastic Scraper and a Wire brush, oh I have a small house plant shovel, I find that comes in handy, daily. I like that little shovel so much, DH made me a few more, good thing cause I broke the original, years ago.
I had one little section of solid floor, over wire in the grow out pen, thank goodness. I ripped that sucker off within a week, I think, what a mess. Got the younger ones a rubber mat with 1/4" holes (Home Depot) to cover most of the cage until they got big enough to keep their toes inside and they got used to the wire. Then out it comes, cause hosing it down everyday (make 2) is a pain, too. The adults are fine on the 1/2" wire, actually once they are about 3 weeks they need the 1/2" wire, not smaller and they are good to go by then.
I have more to do than play with quail poo everyday. At least everyother day with the droppings pans is enough. Some people just let it drop, cover with lyme, hay shavings whatever, but I can't go that way. Rain makes it to stinky. I'd rather empty my pans in the compost area and cover with hay, than shovel later. I usually have only around 100 quail around here and thats enough work.
I don't know how these people keep up with 100's of birds. I couldn't do it, thats not for me.
