Is it merit, chance, numbers(views/likes/replies/etc), nomination?

I think it’s the number of replies! By the way, I was just wondering how do people get awarded with medals like the ones you have?

I've had 4 threads featured, and the only theme I've noticed is that they are 'hot' or 'interesting' enough to promote prolonged passionate discussion.
As with all data sets there are outliers, including several threads that I've watched have little to no further discussion once featured.
