how can u stop a rooster from crowing

Actually I read an article by Dr. Temple Grandin, the animal behavior expert, once, and she did refer to rapist roosters. Apparently, the instinctive way for chickens to mate is that the rooster does his little drop-wing-shuffle dance and the hen then squats and the roo mounts her. Her theory is that the breeding for larger animals has caused some of those instincts to be lost, and now the rooster just grabs the hen's head feathers and climbs on, whether the hen squats or not. She called them rapist roosters.

Intersting!!! Did she explain why some roosters are more aggressive at it then others. I had a roo that regardless of what age he was, he was a complete gentleman with his girls. Maybe they were just more receptive.

I will have to read up on this article...thanks for the info!!!

Or maybe that is WHY they were more receptive! LOL

Hahaha!!! That is very likely!!!

Sally F- yes, that is EXACTLY what is going on in my coop right now! Sometimes two roos will work together to corner a girl! Evil boys!

I've had to psyche myself up to do the butchering- I got dual purpose birds for this reason- but it's been a looooong time since I had to 'dispatch' an animal.

The meat bird section has been really educational- everything I needed was right there. The boys' attitudes are making me feel not so bad about it, either!

You never watched my Law Grey stag chase hens down and beat them up before taking advantage then. There is nothing gentleman like about him.
