How Did You Discover BYC?

Last year I was desperatly looking for a new house in the country, I wanted out of the city I had been living in most of my life so badly, the rate of crime and theft was increasing and the schools were becoming overcrowded. I did a search on Craigslist and found this house I'm in now. While looking over the pictures of the back area I thought to myself what a fantastic place to raise chickens. It was totally random and I hadn't thought about it much before. So I googled chickens and found this site. After reading post after post I knew I had to do it. We bought the house and within a few weeks we had built a coop. Chickens came soon after. I had six total. Now I have 33. 20 of which are meat birds. This site taught me I could do this and have fun with it and I know now I will never be without chickens. So. I blame you BYC.

When: End of February 2007

How: Google search for "homemade incubator"

Why: I had just lost my favorite duck to a predator. She had just started laying again. I decided that rather than sit around and grieve over my loss, I would incubate her eggs. I didn't feel that I had the time to research or buy an incubator. The entire incubation and hatch had me glued to BYC for as much information as I could get. End result -- out of 6 eggs (3 from the nest, 3 from the fridge) 5 were fertile and ALL FIVE HATCHED! Couldn't have done it without you all.

Edited to add -- This is how I became "overrun with drakes." 4 of 5 were drakes.

My boyfriend's son was given some chickens and he brought them to us. I wanted to learn more about how to take care of them so I did a search on the internet and found BYC. At first I read stuff on this site all day long but still could never read everything. Now I just look around once in awhile.

I found this site by using Google!Thank god it was here I found out so much info in just a short period of time! I bought t-shirts from BYC which we wear proudly!

Google search. Don't remember when, but I think about the end of March, 08. I started looking for info on sexing chicks. Lurked around for a while, then decided to join the fray. If I don't log on every day, I think I'll go through withdrawal !!

Still don't have too many ideas on successfully sexing chicks, but I did find out a lot of other neat stuff. Including help on raising my new pharoah quail (goldens).

Ran across some super people who, if they thought I was an idiot, at least tried not to tell me that to my "face".

BTW, I can successfully sex chickens. The rooster usually crows and if it laid an egg, it is definitely a hen.
