I got here through google and other sites, but why?

Our paper had a story about a local girl who was facing a legal challenge about keeping her hens. It mentioned a trend about more people keeping chickens in the city- how they are good about keeping bugs down and give fresh eggs. I live way out in the boonies, but that's what sparked my interest.

DH said chickens were a pet that we would be able to keep. We just aren't home enough to give a cat or dog the attention it needs.

I've been thinking and talking (ad nauseum) about getting chickens for a few years. Every time my DH and I went into TSC to get sunflower seed for the wild birds, I would always stop at the magazine/book section to check out the chicken books. So, for Christmas, DH got Hobby Farms Chickens by Sue Weaver for me. I guess it was his way of saying "Put up or shut up!"

I Googled "raising chickens" and found BYC and joined on 1/10/08 and it's been downhill ever since! By the way, BYC, thanks for the carpal tunnel syndrome!

THis site was mentioned on one of the other sites I go to....
It was either chickens-101, HFsheep, or maybe homesteadingtoday. They are all yahoo groups. I was reading one post and there was a link to this site..So curiosity got the best of me. I clicked the link, and was hooked ever since...
Since being on this site for about a month or so (maybe 2 now I don't remember)...I have.....went and bought an incubator, have it full of eggs, and even ordered my first every set of eggs over this site (let alone ordered first every anything over the net). It's so addicting......

I joined another chicken group. I posted my first post and was totally crucified because I asked what would be the best chicken to raise to feed my dogs " RAW". They accused me of training fighting dogs and thought I was going to feed live chickens to the dogs. When I tried to explain, my posts where banned. Now mind you, I have 12 chihuahuas. I, at the time, was feeding the raw diet because one of my little guys was so allergic to so many of the additives in bagged kibble he almost died. The "raw diet" saved his life. Anyway, I started searching for another group to join. I used the search engine and found BYC. I did not post in the beginning because I was too afraid. I read everything and got to know some wonderful people just by reading. I finally got up enough nerve after almost a year to post but NOT about feeding chickens to my dogs. To this day I have not used any of my pet chickens for dog food. They still get the stuff from the grocery store. I know it is not as good as home raised chicken but how could I ever feed JJ, Heney Penny, Red, Maggie, etc. to my pack of fighting Chihuahuas. BYC is the most friendly, understanding, helpful group on the internet. And I am so glad the other group didn't want me.

I found you through Google. I had no chickens then but a strong desire to have some and I wanted to know as much as I could before they came to live with us. This site has been a wealth of knowledge and I've met some wonderful people here.

I bought my first chickens in January at the local flea market. One of them starting showing symptoms of an illness. I was new to chickens and didn't know what to do, so I did a search on yahoo that lead me here. The BYC members were so helpful and friendly, I was addicted instantly!!!!!!! Thanks to all the enablers here, I now have an incubator, I'm up to 78 chickens and many more on the way!!!!!!!!
