Awhile back, you all helped me treat my cochin for this weird huge growth she had on her lower right side. None us knew what is was, but I took your advice and cleaned it out and cut away dead tissue. It helped. She could walk again. But it came back again. It weeps brown fluid and creates these cheese-like substance filled horns (gross, I know). The flies got to her and the maggots actually helped clear out some of the debris. we cleaned her up again but now it is back and bigger than ever (see other pic). After a lot of research, I believe she has a cystic oviduct and leuprolide acetate is the suggested treatment. Can I purchase this and administer it myself, or do you have any other suggestions as to how I can treat her? I am worried that soon we won’t be able to clean it out enough to allow her to walk.
thank you!

Poor thing!
I'm very sorry, but I would put this hen out of her misery. Not to be harsh, but I do not believe a hormone implant will cure her. No implant cures a hen that has reproductive disorders, they are a supportive care measure/ attempt at prolonging life and providing comfort. Implants are administered by a vet only if you can find one that see chickens. They can be expensive and short lived in effectiveness. Implants may need to be repeated in as little as 3 months apart.

Imho, your hen is not suffering from Cystic Oviduct. Not sure what is causing all the pus, but your initial post was back in August. It's been 5 (ish) months which is a long time for this to be going on.

Your initial post https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/what-is-this-large-hollow-growth.1487721/

Cystic Oviduct affects the reproductive system and is generally clear fluid found in the right oviduct.
There is no cure. Cystic Oviduct is discovered upon necropsy when the reproductive system is examined.

I have to agree with Wyorp on this. This is a bad infection or something that's been going on with this chicken for a long time. I remember seeing your initial post on this and had hoped her issues would have cleared up by now.

I would cull and do a necropsy to see what might be causing this.

Thanks so much for you input. Very helpful. She does everything normally (eating, drinking, socializing) and her personality is unchanged. Just when the cyst gets too big, she struggles to walk. I don’t want her to suffer! So best to put her down even though everything else about her seems okay? Thanks for your help!

I always try to doctor my chickens back to health. I would say try. I have had chickens for almost 2 years. Wyorp has had chickens for I dont even know how many years. Listen to Wyorp, your gut, and your conscience.
