How do you all do it?

I have worked at a hospital and hospital-owned medical practice for 20 years. It is not the same anymore. I love the people I work with also, but it is so different! I do understand what you mean! I tell friends that when I "retire" I will get a job that I love!

Ken takes the outside, I take the inside, no matter what time of year it is.

He gets the outside done much fast that I do the inside, but I don;t like doing hard labor, such as mucking the coops and lifting the feed bags. I go out there when he is done and I get the enjoyable part.

I love this idea! it never would have occured to me. I usually shovel(well, dustpan)out their frequent spots but this sounds even easier and quicker. as for the rest-I retired(forced out at 30 years) from a position at vet teaching hospital in ohio and THAT is when I had the most animals(during that 30 yrs) cause of all the knowledge/help around me plus the fact I had $ then. now I am $ struggling but at least the child is of age and going to college this fall(which gives me mental break during the day) so have not added "pets" in a while and if its something productive we can adopt it.

Well, I waited until my kids were out of college and gone on their own to decided to work part time and get into chickens and honeybees....

But then my dd had our first grand baby--and I wanted to keep him, while she worked... it turned into a 60hr. a week job, some weekends when they go out of town or she works.....We ended up w/ her two dogs, my oldest's two hounds, two dogs that were thrown out at our farm and we have adopted/rescued three Doxies and purchased one... That means we have ten dogs... The honeybees take care of themselves (for the most part) and I have wanted chickens for yrs ---so I am thrilled to have them.. AND I still work about 25 hrs a week!

So it doesn't leave much time to do those that are not 'have to-s" !

By having a schedule, I don't have to think 'what am I going to do next'!! I have it down to a science now. LOL I have to agree, I LOVE my dropping board. I have kitty litter scoop that I use to scoop/rake poo off into a bucket and add clean shavings.. My whole cleaning routine--takes me about 10 minutes. That's filling feeders, scooping poo and cleaning the waterers (which I do twice a day)...

I'm 41, and married. We have an eight year old son. He's currently in second grade, and playing soccer. My mother has an apartment above our garage. She gets him off to school when I'm working during the week (my days off vary).

We have two cats, one dog, and twelve chickens, and a 4,200 square foot house on 44 acres.

I'm up at 3:50 am. I leave for work at 5:15 am. I commute 72 miles, to be at work by 6:30 am, and ready for lineup at 6:45 am. If I'm lucky, I can leave for home by 3:00 pm. If I don't have to stop on the way home (which is rare), and traffic doesn't suck (which is rare), I can be home by 4:30. It's usually 5:00 pm or later.

The family has to eat. The animals have to eat. Homework has to be done. My son needs one on one time. My husband needs one on one time (he's lucky if he gets that twice a week). I have to work tomorrow, and I can't believe I'm on BYC right now. It's usually on my days off that I'm on late.

I try to clean the litter boxes twice a week. It doesn't always happen. I try to rake the run and toss the coop twice a week. It doesn't always happen. I try to cook every night. It doesn't always happen. Cleaning? Forget it. Lately, I'm lucky if I can vacuum twice a month. And I can't stand it!! I hate having a furry house. I shave the dog a few times a year, and if I could hold the cats down long enough I'd shave them, too. I try to keep the kitchen and the bathrooms clean daily. but that's even a stretch sometims. I don't know what I would do without my mother (even though she doesn't do bathrooms!). My mother does do most of the laundry, though.

Let's not even get started on the rest of the work that needs to be done outside ..... that's another post.
