DH tells me unequivocally when he is unhappy with the number of animals he's buying feed for. Also when he thinks he may want more, including chickens. Most recently, I was idly clicking through pictures of random rare breeds in his presence, and he happened to glance over my shoulder when I was on the Japanese Phoenix page. His jaw dropped, as he is a huge fan of Japanese artwork--he had thought all these years that the traditional phoenix watercolor art of Japan was based, as some foolish art historians have blathered, on travelers' stories of peacocks. When he saw that it was quite obviously a chicken breed, not a peacock, he did this, "wow, that's a chicken? It's gorgeous!" I showed him a couple of different feather patterns and mentioned that IF he should want one they were indeed available from various breeders and hatcheries. He got all quiet and thoughtful then.
I find that if he has many many objections, they are often overcome by cuteness factor. You gotta get things that are cute. And if you say you'll clean them, you really do have to be the one doing all the cleaning. DH doesn't object much to pets if I'm the one doing the cleaning, feeding and watering.
