How do you cull unwanted chicks ?

O.K. This is probably stupid but I have to ask. Can you use the gassing(either, starter fluid) method to kill them and then dress them out to eat? It is the cutting the throat thing that I think I will have trouble with. Probably can't do it that way but was just wondering.

But then how are you supposed to make chicken curry out of them? :p

I don't know about you, but I'm not cleaning and plucking a chick for a mouthful of meat.

I bury the little critters under my pear trees. Doesn;t seen to harmt he trees much.

No, if you gas an animal, it will get into the meat so you do not want to eat it. Haha, and yeah, don't think a chick would have even a mouth full of meat, maybe half a teaspoon. LOL

If you use ether make sure you leave them in at least 15-20 minutes. This is a sad story but true. I learned a valuable lesson it's a sensitive subject to me now.

I had a baby chick that couldn't stand at all, couldn't eat or drink and was almost two days old. I put that chick in a closed container with a rag with plenty of ether on it for almost ten minutes,. It died quickly and peacefully, I then took it's dead body out wrapped it in a paper towel and put it in the trash can that was about to be taken out with the shells from hatching.

About 25 minutes later I get the can to take out and hear chirping, the chick came to life, I felt horrible and got all teared up, wanted to save it but I know ether damages eyes and lungs, and I had to get DH to take it outside and finish the job. I felt so bad, I feel like I did it more harm than good, DH said I should have listened to silkiechicken and cut it's head off with a pair of scissors. I just couldn't do it because I'd been trying to save it's life for two days.

That's why I cannot use the bator again for a while because it seemed cruel to me.

5 hours sounds good, I thought I read on here that it took about 10-20 minutes.

I'm taking a little break from hatching, cuz it's like after having labor pains you kind of forget about until you have the next baby.... I have to get over this incident before I can hatch more...

I like the ether idea. Is it humane and painless like the injection euthanisia that vets use? I am a vegetarian and could never take their heads off. If I have a sick chicken I have my dad kill it, he uses a shovel and chops their heads. Kinda weird. If it's humane, I would probably go with the ether idea. But they would have to be like crippled.
