I've been dealing with the same exact thing with my lone silkie chick. I have a clear plastic brooder in the living room. For a while, just being able to see me in the same room is enough to keep him/her happy. Then after a while its, "I NEED YOU!!!!" If I stick my hand in there, she calms down and starts pecking and making happy noises, but I can't spend the whole day with my hand in the brooder and as soon as I take it out she's back to screaming.

About 50% of the time I can tuck her in her "sleeping bag" (like a mother hen tucking her under her breast) and she goes right to sleep. But other times she just backs out screaming. I use a fluffy sock that's folded over on itself. When she goes in headfirst she can't see me leave, and since the sock surrounds her, she feels like "momma" is there.

I've spent way too much time handling her and I know I've spoiled her. Especially since she can see me when I'm in the room. She just screams until I pay attention. Luckily I have eggs due this week, so my only consolation is that she'll have buddies soon...if I didn't just jinx myself by saying that.

Try the sock. I don't know if they all have the tendency to want to burrow, but mine has from day one. Then at least she's in the dark and might get sleepy. Good luck!

Wow, Griffox... I never knew they actually get lonely. She seems ok now. My kids were doing all the handling yesterday and as soon as they left, it started up. How old is yours. Mine is 2 days today. I have some ducks hatching in a few days, so it won't be lonely anymore either. Thanks for the reply and good luck to you and your little one(s)..

She's 10 days old, so I've been at it for a while...seems like years.

chicks are much more aware of their surroundings than I ever realized. When you have a whole batch of them, they seem oblivious to anything outside of pecking and pooping. If I put her on the floor, she'll follow me to the next room.

I'm sure once you get the ducklings in things will quiet down...either that or she will have the ducks screaming, too.

Thats too cute. Mine actually hops like crazy in the cage to get to me. I was up til midnight last night because it was breaking my heart. I know... silly right? But can't help it. I can't believe she actually made it. Out of 17 eggs, that was the only one that held on. We had a temp spike to over 104 with only 5 days to go. The others quit, while we were all rooting for her (hoping its a her), so she is as personal as it gets. Lets hope she does not start a chorus with the ducklings, I will be sleeping out in the coop with them

I had 18 eggs and the same thing happened. I moved them to the LG for hatching and the stupid thing went up to 105 overnight for who knows how long. I had to literally hatch this chick under warm running water...she was so stuck to her shell. It might be silly to let these little buggers get to us, but I obviously have no room to judge. I think I'd let her sleep with me if I didn't think I'd squish her.

The sock and toy pics...awwwwwwwwwww!

I know that even two together aren't real thrilled--and get REAL vocal about that-- but it was an infirmary so I sort of had to keep them seperated...now I'm afraid to put them back in with the wild bunch.

We had family over for new years and they closed the door to the unfinished bathroom in the basement. It can get real warm in there, so the door MUST remain open while I have the bators in there. They didn't know. This little one was stuck too in the shell a bit. Had a hard time hatching, took 2 days. So it is possible to have a high temp spike and still get one out of it. The 2 ducklings I have in there also are ok too. I would let her sleep with me too, but I WOULD definately squash it (too restless). I held it a while today and she it much more quiet than it was last night. So I guess it just needs more love
