How far back do you go?

OneGreatFamily.com are where I went back the farthest. They have neat relationship calculating tools. They have over 88,000 in my tree. Even the help desk there was shocked. I guess it's not that common to have a more complete tree. When all the famous names started popping up ,I googled and double checked records. It was really humbling and exciting for me. It makes it hard when people start doing the prove it game, but I know I did solid research and checking sources. The best of luck to you. I find my Irish research hard too.

how have people managed to go back so far-ive got stuck in the 1750s so am intrigued

I spent years tracing direct and provable evidence on my line and three others connected with it.

I think a lot of that "I'm related to King Henry the VIII!" is pure fantasy and can't be proven.

My line contains full names, birth dates and birthplaces, actual historical records (census records, gravestones, court records, family Bibles), photographs, letters, and other material. I have contact with living relatives from other lines in my family tree who supply me with material on their own line that matches up with mine, and so on.

You have to be very careful because most of the "family tree" records online are corrupted with incorrect material. Anyone can add stuff to them. I have found and corrected many errors just in the four generations behind my own birth.

Chickabee19 Me,too. I was leary when all the famous names started popping up. I checked, double checked and documented. I also have about 5 extended family members in their 80's spread out across the country who help me with research. The famous ones are easier to research than my Cherokee or Irish relatives. The info is mainly in historical documents. Ex: Thomas Jefferson had an older sister Jane, she is my grandmother, her mother is Jane Randolph the one descended from French and English royalty. All public records. But try saying your related to the Jefferson's and watch the claws come out.

I know... the problem is that he had multiple 'families', and many people are prejudiced.

Well because my grandmother was the oldest and a girl, it's different. She married John George Davis at only 14 years old and their father died when she was 17 and Thomas was 14. I noticed after that she moved away from Virginia and the relationship with family became distanced. So sad. We are all connected after all.
