How i built my chicken coop

Hello.

I'm danish, but live in sweden. A couple of years ago i made a video showing how i built my coop and run, but made it in danish.
Because i want to contribute to this forum, i have gone through the painstaking process of writing english subtitles for it, so i can share it with you. Damn i talked a lot in that video .

Anyway - here it is - a description of my 100 sq.ft. coop. Remember to turn on the subtitles on the bottom right, unless you just want to enjoy the sound of the throat disease, that is the danish language .

Wow Peter! It looks like you've Incorporated a lot of useful features. Great job bringing them all together into what looks like a very functional coop.

I've been working awkwardly around the roost for the 8 years every I clean the coop. Your roost that swings up out of the way is simple but brilliant!

Great, thank you for your time to translate. Being in Texas where it is so hot in the summertime, just love the deep overhang created for keeping cool. Could not help but smile at all of your rocks. We have limestone rocks everywhere with very shallow soil. It is hard to plant, garden, and, yes, to build. We had to get an auger for the tractor with carbide teeth for building a fence.

Love your design and thanks for sharing. Your chickens will enjoy their sturdy coop for years to come.

Yeah the overhangs take some light, but the function is great . But those rocks - they make everything a nightmare construction wise All vegetables are in raised beds, and everytime i have to build something new, i get a small depression thinking about those damn rocks .

And Yes - the lifting roosts work great, and the area under them can actually double as a brooder pen, with a simple chicken wire frame around the bottom, since the roost works as a lid.

But i must admit, that even though i built i bigger than my need, i am still in the process of building another coop - it's just hard to stop the chicken force .

Very glad at least one person watched the video, so me sitting there making subtitles manually with my best school english wasn't a total waste .

lol, I wish the American school system was proficient enough to at least make a majority of students fluent in one other language. Every Scandinavian I've met is fluent in at least 3 languages.

Awesome Job, Peter. I may steal your cleats which hold your nest boxes from tipping. I use plastic dish tubs, and ended up screwing them in place to prevent tipping. A cleat would be better, by far, but b/c my dish tubs are light wt, I may need 2!

Wow - thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad some of the details were of use to some of you. I know i have been inspired a lot from looking around in here.

Regarding the nesting boxes, i have made a small change. I have made them a bit lower, and put small feets on them, so there is a small air gap beneath them. With a box that fit in the area with very little slop, it was hard to get the box into its place completely, if there was even a little bedding material spilled in there. With a little room under the box, this is not a problem. I just have to sweep out a some accumulated shawings once a week or so.

I amazed how gracious most people in here are. When i originally posted the video (for people who understood danish), half the comments i got were from hardcore "mansplainers", picking apart every single little thing they would have done differently (and of course WAY better ).
Just love that people in here see something they can use, and don't feel small, just because they didn't necessarily come up with it themselves, but instead acknowledge that they have been given a good idea, and might implement it.
