How long did your bulb last?

I always worried about burning down the house, so now I only use Ceramic bulbs made for reptiles. You don't have to worry about the chicks gettting burned, they don't put out light so they are non-irritating to your chicks~ I just keep a light on in the room. I have one I bought years ago and it is still going strong. I just bought a couple extras as back up. Best price online through Amazon.

I start with the 100w about 12 to 15 inches above the chicks, depending on how cold your room is, then when they start sleeping further away from the light I change to the 60w. I have 4 week old BLRW chicks that I am still using the 60w bulb in their house because our overnight temps are in the mid 30's.

I am another lucky one. My first batch I used a red 250 watt heat bulb outside since day one, and it didn't burn out until they had been without it. I ended up giving it to a friend to use. Right now I have a red 250 watt bulb on 24/7, and it's been 4 weeks and still going strong. My chicks are to the point though when if the light goes out they will be alright for a little bit, but I have an extra bulb on hand just in case and for if and when new chicks come in

Yes, me too. I think that humidity (such as a rainy day) causes them to blow before their time. I actually had one shatter all over the broody box one day. After then, I don't use them anymore.

Yikes! That can happen if you screw it on too tight--at least that's what the instructions on the lamp said. How long did it take to shatter? That would've freaked me out! Where the chicks OK?

My 250 watt red bulb just blew last night, overnight sometime! After a full 2 days of use. I got it at Lowes... I"m so glad I have back-ups! Grrrrrr, my poor babies were freezing!!!

They are fine now though.....
