I am going to go back and read this whole thread, but.. In the mean time, I have been regularly getting 1+ eggs per chicken multiple times a week. (I would say at least 2 times a week.)
Normally, I would be ecstatic! But! This being winter I don't want my girls to get tired out. I was lucky to get really good layers when we got them. Is there anything I should be doing to ensure that they are healthy? I feed just a normal laying mesh that is 16-18% protein, I give them Grit and Oyster shell once a week. Currently they are not free-ranging, as the weather has been too cold and too much snow on the ground for them to be out. They are 7 months old (Hatch date was June 24th, 2013) and started laying at 17 weeks. They have nearly layed an egg every single day. I am thinking that each is laying an extra one a week. (at least, possibly 2 extra) There has only been 2-4 times I remember only getting one egg from my pair. (We started with 3, but suffered a loss at the end of Autumn, which one ceased laying for about a week, where the other went into a light molt for about 2 and a half weeks at that time, then went right back into laying at that time.)
Is this normal for them to lay more than one in a 24 hour period? They are Golden Comets. We get our initial lays between 07:30 and 09:00 am, then there is usually another egg call at about 13:00-14:00. We have a very regular routine.
