Rob, Blooie and Cochix~what is the oldest that you will sell to a customer? Will your customers accept them if they are a week or more old?
Cochix , great idea to provide egg handling instructions!! I had one customer who complained that the egg yolks would break the minute they hit the frying pan. through questioning I discovered that they were storing the eggs at room temp after I had stored them refrigerated. A drastic change in temp breaks down the yolk membrane causing it to be weak. Pus, I rinse the eggs which means bacteria can grow if not refrigerated!!! Thankfully they never got sick, but I had to educate them. Every time they get eggs from me I quip "remember to put them in the fridge immediately"....LoL. They have not had a weak yolk problem since.......
Cochix, who is your number one broodie candidate? I have a black Orp who is the best broodie mama ever, sure she will take your finger off, but she is loyal to the eggs and chicks from the moment she sits on the eggs up until the chicks are 8 weeks old. I can actually keep the chicks and her with the flock because no chicken will dare mess with her kids....she would rip their heads off! Which means she not only hatches them and raises them, she also integrates them into the flock. I love that hard working mama!
It sounds like pencil works well and does no harm then. Thanks everyone!!
