How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

10/11 must be a good day

My 6 girls started laying 3 weeks ago. Last week I was getting 5 a day. Now, the last few days, in only getting 3 or 4. Is this normal for new layers? It really bums me out!!

Yes, it's perfectly normal, which is why people report different numbers of eggs every day. Their bodies are getting adjusted to this new development, which is pretty taxing for them. So, enjoy the eggs you're getting, relax knowing that there will be times when you won't know what to do with them all, and remember they're living beings, not egg dispensers, so will be inconsistent.

Think of it as a nice surprise each day.

Edited to add:

PS. As previously stated, chickens don't lay an egg each and every day. They lay eggs between 25 - 27 hours, on average. Do the math and you'll see you should get about 5 eggs per week under optimum conditions with your best layers. Mileage will vary depending on time of year (length of daylight hours), weather, moulting, health of chickens, age, breed, individual hen, and broodiness. Comments on this thread about deadbeat hens should reassure you that things are quite normal at your coop. Chicken keeping is not a "set it and forget it" proposition, nor is there a "guaranteed rate of return" on your investment. :fl

We got one today…as in our very first one! We have three 19 week old barred rocks and have been anticipating this day for a while (pretty much since we picked them up at the feed store as day-old chicks). Very rewarding and so proud of my girl Amy (Penny and Bernadette are on the clock for their firsts)!
