The control group is down to 6 ladys and the free range is up to twelve ladys who spend most of the days under the different sheds and under the heavily stickered stage brush for their safety form the suns heat and predators so to get a good egg count id difficult .

I will need some time to see if I can get a roo visually adequate for breeding so I am out for the summer at best .
Hopefully by taking your time you will find the perfect replacement or at least one you can be very satisfied with! I hope you have a happy 4th of July & get to spend at least part of it with family!!

I just checked under both of my broodies. The Black Penedesenca lady is doing very well, the other hen has had an egg or 2 break under her. I found the 1st 1 right away and tried to clean off the rest of the eggs as best I could. Tonight she had another one broken, it almost looked like it had cooked yolk in it and was a bit smelly. I went ahead and candled the remaining eggs under her. Only 2 looked like they were at the appropriate stage, the other 4 had little or no visible development. I went ahead and left them all with her. The due date is this Friday or Saturday. If none of her's hatch I am going to go buy 3 chicks to put under her so she can get on with life! I think I may not have cleaned off the eggs well enough from the 1st busted egg and thus compromised the rest of them in her nest.
I am very confident that the Black Penedesenca broody will hatch out at least 2 or 3. I will put the rest of the dark brown eggs from under her into the incubator after she has hatched the ones that are ready since I know that those eggs were laid over several days ( I only have 2 hens that lay those & there are 7 of those eggs in the nest! Plus the broody hen is one of the girls that lays those eggs & I don't think she has laid many ( if any since she went broody).

I have 321 layers, I only get 120 eggs per day. The pullets have been laying for two months now. What can i do?
What time of year is it where you are? If you are having shorter days that would slow down egg production. Also when you find the dead hen in the mornings do you check her over for signs of injury? Could some of them be egg bound? Do they have food in their crop? Do you butcher them to see if there are signs of problems internally? Is there food in the gizzard? Any sign of parasites?
Are you feeding then egg layer pellets ( or crumbles) or something else?
