for an Americauna Easter egger hen? Someone on Craigslist has them for $25 a piece, supposedly very tame birds. I really want some of these but I am feeling like $25 is too much. I just bought red sex links (Golden Comets) last week-seven of them at $12 each and thought that was too much. Please advise.

Thanks!!

Let's change the question to how much would you pay for a laying hen? $25 may be a bit high, but not excessively so. I saw layers (various breeds and mixes, none advertised by breed name) at the feedstore last Friday for $20 each.

Well, they are most likely NOT Araucanas since those are pretty rare and you can only get them from a breeder, not any of the big hatcheries. And EE is a mixed breed that may or may not lay a blue or green egg, so I'm positive that's what they are. Any point of lay pullet to me is worth $10-15, depending on the rarity of it, more if it was really a true Araucana.

My question would be-how old is she? Let's do the math. EEs are good layers but not excessively so. Let's say she lays 5 eggs a week-that's 20 eggs per month. So every three months she lays 5 dozen eggs. What are you paying for a dozen eggs-1.50-2.00? It will take her seven to eight months to pay off her investment not counting the feed you put into her. Will she still be young enough to make a profit off this animal counting feed? Is she breeding quality?
Those are the questions I'd ask before dishing out 25 for an EE.
