How old was your hen when she laid her 1st egg?

Ummm....thanks?

(lol! I HAVE to laugh about this - otherwise I will just spend all day mad every day - lol)

Are you SURE they're not hiding them from you? And you are feeding lay crumble, right? Keep us posted, it will be interesting to see how elderly they are when they finally lay for you.

Yes, they are on layer crumble (free access), and free ranging. They are checked on very frequently for eggs/nesting while freeranging and once a week or so we leave them in the run for the whole day just to be sure we are not missing anything.

3 days ago I started kicking them out of the coop and locking the door when they got in for bed as early as 3:30. I open it again for them at 4:45 because it is dusk at 5. I realized that they were definitely going in too early for bed. Maybe that will help....

I will keep you posted on my "elderly hens" - lol!!!

My hens have always been around 6 months when they lay their first eggs. My oldest hens are going to be 8 years come spring, they still lay eggs, but not at this time of the year. Last year, I bought more chicks, they started laying at 6 months, RIR's. This year I bought some more chicks, 4 of them are 6 months this week, and my DH found two eggs yesterday!! I no longer have the RIR's I bought a year ago spring, and the 8 year olds are not laying right now, one lays green eggs, the other molting, and I just do not believe the eggs are from the 3rd 8 year old, so my 6 month olds must be starting to lay!! The are Easter Eggers! But the two eggs are brown, I wanted green ones. Oh well, eggs are eggs and they are yummy no matter what the color!!

My Ancona was hatched in March... didn't lay her first egg until October and it was a teeny-tiny white egg. Her subsequent eggs are also small. I was hoping for large white eggs. shucks...
